I have said it many times, and I will say it again here and now. I think the model companies have been missing an opportunity over the last couple decades to pay for licensing, or at least come up with agreements to produce cars of TV show and movies more often if they want to keep bringing youth into the hobby. Looking back, when the General lee was released around 1980, the hobby was in a lull, but that kit sold over a million copies. Knight Rider, Herbie and others have interested both youth and adults over the years. In this case, I am super glad that there have been a couple Lightning McQueen models over the last year or so, this one a larger scale one, but again, where is Mater and the rest of the gang? I know for fact, this household would likely buy one of each. LOL. I know that not all the characters would sell the same, but at least Mater, Cruz Ramirez, Luigi etc The other issue, is getting them IN FRONT of kids. I want this new Lightning kit, but I have not seen it at my LHS, or Hobby Lobby. While I can certainly buy it online, that is not the impulse buy that the hobby needs to get kids interested in the hobby. You need to have that kit, on a shelf somewhere (Target/Wally World/etc_ about the 3rd shelf up from the bottom) or near the other toy auto isle stuff. -
One of my first childhood cars I liked. Looking at that "trunk" tho, I am surprised Chim Chim did not burn his monkey butt given the designed the mufflers right in there! LOL Looks like a fun build!

Off to a great start, I have not seen one of these being built before.

Brushable Clear?
Modelbuilder Mark replied to JollySipper's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If you want something self leveling, I hear that a lot of people have success with future floor polish. Otherwise it would depend on what you are trying to do. If you need to polish it out, etc. The biggest challenge, is finding something that will hide the brush strokes. -

Getting a Hobby Lobby!!!!!!
Modelbuilder Mark replied to SCRWDRVR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here here Chris!. If I am near the Hobby Lobby on any given weekend, even if there is no kit I "need" I will buy something using the coupon, such as Tamiya primer (can always use that), or extra display case, or glue etc. Then always hit the clearance isle, not limiting myself to model stuff. I bought Ott lights for like 75% off, found beading wire for break lines, inks, all sorts of useful stuff! -
I do not mind the re-pops, as I was not always in a position to pick them up in previous renditions over the years. Also, as my tastes have broadened, I can appreciate more what some of them offer, especially in the retooling of missing parts, or parts that needed upgrading, like tampo tires, better decals, restored parts etc.

Nice to see one stock. Despite the simplicity of some aspects, like the front axle, these kits can look really nice.

Screwing up and dealing with it
Modelbuilder Mark replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Multiple times, with various resolve. On one project, the paint totally cracked, and rather than repaint, I decided to keep the cracked paint and turned it into an aged patina project. Another time, on a long term project, I had spent a lot of time building this rear end. From the airbag mounts out, it is aluminum tubing. However, when I primed and shot the paint, I did not like the paint, and without thinking, dropped the sub assembly into the purple pond, only to discover, and be reminded, that aluminum does not hold up to Purple Power. All those nuts are individual resin heads, and the mounts were scratched, so I was not about to let this one go. Scrubbed all the ooze off rebuilt it, despite being initially upset and disheartened, it worked out. (turned out I needed the axle to be a TINY bit longer anyway) -
Cool, my first Dream car, and to this day, I still dream of owning one.

Modeling for fun.....again!
Modelbuilder Mark replied to GaryR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Steve, I agree that there can be benefit to criticism, however, I think it needs to be understood and respected that not everyone is asking for it. Think of your LEAST favorite hairstyle you wide has ever had. Unless she specifically asks you what you think of the hair, ask yourself, how would she take it if you said, "That hair does is just wrong for your face, and does not suit you at all" Regardless of intent, I would wager it would not go over well. -

Cool looking truck. When I was a kid, I recall seeing a lot of these as my father owned the body shop attached to the local Dodge dealership. -
Nice save on the flocking. I have learned over the years that they are not all created equal, AND, some from the same supplier might respond the same. I don't use them much anymore due to mess, but when they work, they look good. In the future, try testing on scrap pieces, and use Elmers, paint several options. Looking good.
