Plugging a couple of holes in the long-way-out project stash, these two as a result of having seen inspiring builds of both kits on this forum.

You gonna shorten it to correct, or just live with it?

Personally, I think if and when I ever get around to building mine, I'll just live with it. I never noticed the difference in length between Bonnies and Catalinas back in the day, when I'd see several '65-'66s in 3D every day, and also saw a lot of pictures of them. I never knew about the length difference until fairly recently--last decade or two.

Yeah, I'm going to live with it. I like the look of the model so much that if I were to build a real one, I'd lengthen it.  B)

Do you happen to know if it's a screwbottom-derived chassis, or a newer tool style with separate details? (Mine is on the way, not here yet)

It's basically the 1965 Bonneville annual kit, same as it ever was, except for the "new" nameplates and trim.

And thank you too, sir.

Now the question is whether I'll flog myself unnecessarily by upgrading the chassis, or just build a nice mild custom...maybe even a curbside.

Hmmmmm...I think in this case, less may be more.  :D

I've never liked the roof on that kit, either.

Pretty much nobody has ever gotten that roof right, not AMT, not Hasegawa, not Revell. From what I've seen, AMT did tweak that roof a bit for 1966 and the '66 Impala and Wildcat tops are the least wrong ones, IMHO.

I've never seen the MPC '66 Bonneville HT kit (though I have a convertible), so can't comment on that one. sadly.

A little off-topic, but years ago (2011 maybe) I saw a sectioned mid-'50s Caddy with that roof chopped and grafted on, in bare steel, out in Az. It's my understanding the thing went to Oz or NZ, but it was a stunning piece of work.

You wouldn't think those parts could all be melded together into a coherent whole, but whoever did it had a real feel for design and form and line.

Pretty sure I have photos somewhere...

You speak of all this as if it will EVER actually be finished.

And I don't think you have it in you to build a curbside. B)

It was a white Cutlass, so there are some visual differences, like the wheels and some trim items.

wcfl news car.jpg

My easiest suggestion to match the wheels would be a set of current issue AMT '53 Studebaker wheelcovers, with a small ring added to the center and the three little blades shaved off. You'll have to paint in the little slots near the rim. Good luck with it!1342959328_53studebakercurrentissuewheelcovers.jpg.abe47feb4d046d323972b0d72af916fa.jpg

More difficult would be a set of Jo-Han 1957 Plymouth promo wheels - again, add a ring to the center, but the little slots are already in it. I've cast up some of these in resin - give me a holler if you want to try a set.

In somewhat different vein to the elegant Pontiac above, the postman bought me this one today:

1:24 Fujimi Suzuki Escudo/Vitara kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr

Under £10 delivered, the reason being that it had been started and the roof pillars on one side had a bit of damage. The plastic is unusually hard, almost brittle, so it's not surprising. Despite that it was very well packed, with various sets of components bagged and extra bubble wrap and newspaper inside the outer box, not just put into a padded envelope like a kit I got last week.

If I can neatly repair the damage and find a set of approprate arch flares I'll build it as some sort of '90s Fatboy, if not then maybe it'll end up as a mudplugger with chunky wheels and tyres from something else.

Another cheap one, maybe an engine donor for an older Mopar?

A whale of a car, and certainly plenty of plastic in the large box.

About time I picked up one of these - Escorts were everywhere when I was growing up. Thoughts are to build this one as a National Hot Rod (1/4 mile oval racer), which will make use of the wide arches.

I used to have one of those Escorts in metallic green with a brown vinyl roof, mk2 16 Ghia converted from auto to a five speed Sierra box. Loads of fun!

Hay, cheers, Chris, I'll pm you about those wheels. I'll definitely buy a set from you. I was going to make resin copies of the 70 Pontiac I recently did, they were the closest I could find to the Cutlass.

Can you easily get ahold of the reissued 78 Dodge pickup? I was thinking of doing the same thing myself, but I think I sold or traded my Viper kit.

If this is not allowed - then admins can go ahead and remove it:

I just received in the mail the Other mag’s 35 year history from 1979-2013. I’m looking forward to reading among other things, Tim Boyd flathead 4 banger engine article and others. I’m not posting the photo of the DVD.

It's a bit hit-and-miss what US kits I can find here, although I do have larger Ford and GM trucks. I've got a Dodge Ram 50 (Mitsubishi L200) but I think the V10 might be a bit of a squeeze in there!

Ah yes, I remember seeing that one on here recently - it looks great! I'd happily have that and you clearly enjoy it havinh kept it for so long. I really like Japanese cars from this era, so well-engineered. Just about to take my '92 LS400 to work today, and the '93 Camry was recently in use for carting stuff around.

The Fujimi kit includes a LHD dashboard, but getting it to be a replica of yours would be a challenge......

I was thinking of this one.
