Years ago we took the kids out to see their grandparents in Surprise, probably around 2001. It was mid March, saw some spring training baseball. Temps in the Phoenix area were 75-80 degrees, very nice for us as we were living in Chicago at the time. Took a trip up to the Grand Canyon, late Winter snow left 14 inches of snow and it was in the low 30's! Needless to say, we didn't stay long! Definitely want to go back there and see all the stuff the inlaws didn't want to see, this thread has me thinking about a trip maybe next year?

Revell Bronco
mikemodeler replied to JTRACING's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Nice job on the weathering and realistic look of a worn truck. -
Me too, although I think the axles and wheels from one of the recent issues of the Jeep CJ-5 would work just fine. I hope they give us a choice of either half or full cab tops for this.

Very nice, clean and well detailed. Great color choices as it is not a color seen all the time. -
It's a thankless, volunteer type job that often goes unnoticed. Michael does a great job and is an all around nice guy to boot! Yes, Harry left a deep void but having communicated with both Michael and Harry, I would like to think Michael will do well following in Harry's footsteps. Both men are class acts and have a passion for the hobby that is reflected in the way this place runs. Many thanks to you Michael!

mikemodeler replied to crowe-t's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Unfortunately no, that kit is long gone. I do have one I am working on, if I get to it I will be sure to snap pictures and share. -

mikemodeler replied to theraif's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Tower Hobbies has some good pricing on Tamiya and Testors paints and offers discounts on orders and occasionally free shipping. If I can't find paint locally, I order it online. -

I carefully used super glue as it attaches to the firewall and body tub. -
Monogram 1/24 Jeep CJ-7? - Hood/Cowl
mikemodeler replied to crowe-t's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
I painted everything unassembled , seemed to work okay. Test fit it several times after you primer it before you spray color to ensure the hood sits down on the fenders correctly, they can be a bit touchy sometimes and need a little sanding to fit properly. -

Nice job on a very basic kit. You made it look great with the lift and detailing. -
"Too Many '69 Camaros and '32 Fords!"
mikemodeler replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If it weren't for the Revell Snap Fast 63 Corvette and 69 Camaro and 34 Ford models, my display cases would be mighty bare! Yes, they have given us many variations of Camaros, Corvettes and 32 -34 Fords, but if Edsels, Studebakers and Pacers were the cars of custom car builders or seen as the "cool" car, then you can bet we would have endless models of them! As for cars I grew up with, I have little to no desire to build a 73 Chrysler Newport, 79 Chevy Caprice or 83 Caprice Wagon that I remember my parents owning. I do have a Moebius Ford pickup to replicate the 71 F250 that my Dad owned that I learned to drive stick shift in, and have a Chevy van to create a 79 G10 he replaced the F250 with. If the kit companies could fulfill all of our wants and desires of cars from the last 50 -60 years and make money doing it, I think they would. -
New Tamiya Lacquers for Airbrushing?
mikemodeler replied to Snake45's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
It is my understanding that chemicals and paints (solvent based items) have to pass the stringent California labeling and content rules in order to be sold in the US. Hopefully Tamiya will see to it to bring these here, would definitely be of interest to many! -
Enjoy it Marty! As someone who has been involved in the auto parts business since 1982 (with a couple of years off), I can certainly relate to wanting to hang it up. Many changes in the 35 years I have been around it, both on the OEM and aftermarket side, and I wish I could tell you it has all been good! Hopefully you will get the time and motivation to build models as well as enjoy life!

68 C10 truck hood
mikemodeler replied to kmc3420's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
In my opinion, it appears to be a little tall. That said, if you are building a monster motor street truck with a tall intake, then that might be what you need to clear it. I have always thought smaller cowl hoods looked better, especially if it is a street truck. -
Got the chance to walk through the Petersen Automotive Museum today while visiting Los Angeles and was impressed with the displays and quality of vehicles they had. The Ferrari and Bugatti vehicles were extremely nice and they had several AMBR winners too. Great day sightseeing in LA but the Museum was definitely the highlight!

Very nice, love the color and that engine compartment looks life like.

One of my favorite cars and models! I have multiple builds of this kit and love how easily they go together and how great they look when done. Nice color choices and the hardtop is a nice addition.

Back at you Kevin! Glad to be of help (and rid of a model!) and can't wait to see it built.

Re-releases
mikemodeler replied to Alix Bernard's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In some cases, manufacturers float news of possible new kits in order to get a sense of how the kit is received. They look at what the pre-orders are from the distributors and retailers and from there they decide what gets released. These pre-orders can be viewed as how soon they will cover their investment. Creating a whole new kit can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars so they have to look at many angles before deciding what to offer. I know that Dave Metzner from Moebius and Ed Sexton from Revell (and possibly other employees from those companies) visit this forum and listen to our chatter. Ed will attend various shows displaying upcoming releases and asking attendees to write down their wish list for future review. Another example of the manufacturers reading this forum (and others) is how kits that had flaws got fixed either before their first run or in the following one. While not all flaws are caught and fixed, us modelers tend to be a critical bunch and our comments don't go unnoticed. -
Thoughts and prayers to you and your brothers in blue G.

The marketing/SPAM calls are getting weirder!
mikemodeler replied to peteski's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
There was a show on a few years ago with comic Tom Mabe called Mabe in America. One of his skits was dealing with a telemarketer and it was hilarious. If I can find it I will post it for all to enjoy. I usually answer the phone and once I know it's a spammer, I leave the phone on the counter or desk and eventually they hang up.
