Porsche Outlaws & Hot Rods
Spex84 replied to afx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
^^^^^^^The lust is strong. Wow. I have developed a sudden need to put Rotiform wheels on a model car project... -
Chinese tariff war and models
Spex84 replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Maybe this will finally justify the people selling sets of kit wheels and pairs of valve covers online for $20 a pop. Model kits are super valuable now, doncha know!! But yeah. Ugh. I have a stash, but it's not that big...and kits are already $45 here in canada. I can't see wanting to spend $60+ per kit. I guess we'll see how it all shakes out, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if those prices rise to compensate, and then never come back down after the trade war is over. I'd like to be wrong. Worst case will actually still be fun: I bet I could build a pretty sweet 1/12 or 1/8 scale hot rod out of wood, foam, plastic packaging, and scrap metal. 3D printed parts to fill in the tricky bits....it would take a while, but prolonging the enjoyment of the creative process isn't a bad thing! Haha. -
Gorgeous engine! Do you have any more info on the distributor setup? Looks to be a cam-driven unit... I have a blown SOHC project and I'm anticipating clearance problems, trying to stuff a distributor in the stock location under the front of the blower.

Need info on '32 Deuce Coupe
Spex84 replied to john66's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I actually heard the reverse--that the car was channeled, but Lucas remembered hi-boys from his youth, so they de-channeled it and kept the chopped grille shell, which is why the car had that (phenomenally ugly IMHO) uphill rise in the radiator support rods. But I'm no movie trivia expert so I could be wrong! -
Model Builders' Warehouse 3D Printed Parts
Spex84 replied to Randy D's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Well those look incredible! -
It has a few glancing cameos in the Tony Stark workshop shots in the first Iron Man movie...and then a very brief front-and-center shot when Tony's deciding what color Jarvis should paint the new suit he's engineered, and says "...put a little hot-rod red on it". Or something to that effect. I remember being stoked to see a 50s-style hot rod in a movie, because they don't appear very frequently these days!
-
Cool wheels! Were they resin, 3D printed, scratchbuilt?? This is a neat lil' buggy, looking forward to seeing the final product.
-
Thanks, I was just curious--I noticed some slight texture and I'd recently experienced the same thing with Krylon, had to sand and polish it out! Haven't had the same issues with Duplicolor, Plasticote, Testors, OR Tamiya.
-
Loving all these engine builds, and the shop diorama. Nice valve covers on that Olds, by the way
-
Looks good! Are you painting with Krylon by any chance?
-
The rotiform wheels are ultra dramatic, so a perfect match to the car. Love 'em. Also love the Memphis-style seat patterns and how the calipers are color-matched to the seat inserts! I was a 90s kid and I recall wearing clothing that had patterns like those.... I have fond memories of the Thule ski box that carted my family's gear around, too. Cowabunga, dude

I never knew these existed!

I didn't know about the cute little Metropolitan-based custom wagons, but Nash/Rambler made fullsize wagons for sure...I'm a big fan of these guys right here: Weird but cool! -
AMT 1/25 Model T Tires
Spex84 replied to jaxenro's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The ones on the right look like AMT '25 T and fit on the wood-spoked wheels from that kit. The ones on the left appear to be AMT '27 Touring tires with wire wheels. -
Well this is friggin' cool so far!!
-
Cool ideas! I love the supercharged corvair mill. Funny, I've had a '27 Touring set aside for several years now with the intent of putting an AMT parts-pack Corvair with dual Webers into it, but it would be '70s resto-rod style rather than the edgy, contemporary competition look you've achieved here. I also like the skeletal exposed-frame look, and the way the front end looks well-balanced and complete even with the hood removed.
-
Very cool, thanks for posting. I really enjoyed the tone and editing of this video. I was thinking "how much history could one red deuce roadster really have?" Turns out, an absolutely ridiculous amount. Wow. They do a great job of setting the car up as a perfect embodiment of the entire hobby and its history.
-
Beautiful work! If you told me it was a replica of a real truck, I would have believed you I absolutely love the paint job. You've built a very attractive vehicle!
-
Very cool! Those grates look...great! Very convincing. I'm always surprised by the true dimensions of street hardware like stop signs, drains, etc. They always seem much larger in person than I would have expected. Objects like these are ideal for a filament printer...they have detail, but it's not incredibly intricate, and some slight texture is no problem because they'll probably be sanded and weathered anyway.

Car Model History in My Hands!
Spex84 replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow, that's neat. I'd almost be afraid to score a genuine magazine car in need of restoration...my skills aren't up to that kind of task! Lots of cool models from the pages of the 60s mags that I'd happily own if I could, though. Good luck with the restoration effort! -
I've read a lot of articles that surmised the new mid-engine Corvette would be sold alongside the traditional-arranged version. It makes sense that they'd try to push it up-market considering they have the Camaro to fill in the lower-tier muscle-car space. The design of the new 'vette is a solid yawn for me. Absolutely chunky and boring as heck. Looks like bloated version of the current car with tacked-on vents at angles that don't really seem to belong, like a bad aftermarket bodykit. I bet they'll prime the pump with this derivative and familiar "traditional corvette" shape, wait a few years and then move to an updated version with a full design refresh that pushes the car further in a "supercar" styling direction. Think current Ford GT40 versus the previous "retro" design. They don't want to scare potential buyers off by making something too unfamiliar, but I think they could have pushed a little harder! I may eat my words when the camo-cladding comes off, but...the basic mass of the body is pretty awkward no matter what lines decorate it. I'd like to be wrong though! Still...Mid-engine Corvette. Finally! That's pretty neat and I can't wait to see one out on the streets.

Speaking of smart cars
Spex84 replied to oldnslow's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
To bring this 'round I tried to find a video of people crashing Little Tykes cars in offroad downhill races, but apparently Barbie Jeeps are the ride of choice for that particular sport. Oh well! -
Speaking of smart cars
Spex84 replied to oldnslow's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
So if I want to avoid looking like a dork, I'd better get one of these, right? I've always liked the Smart car...I don't necessarily want one, but they're offbeat and useful in an urban setting. Safety-wise--meh, all the used cars I can actually afford (including the one I'm driving now) have terrible crash ratings anyway. If I based my next car purchase on the notion that I need to "win" in a crash...jeez, I'd need something that can pulverize a Peterbilt! I remember seeing a Smart Car crash test back when they were new; I was actually impressed at how well it did, considering. I imagine they'd be a heck of handful in bad weather though...4" deep slush and that short wheelbase would be nasty. Dry roads and short trips is what they're really made for, and that's OK. -
Brilliant! Very effective re-design and exceptionally clean execution..I'm seeing a little Porsche 924 in the nose, too. Neato! That Copperhead interior looks very natural in the Avanti, which is surprising.

Me too! I really appreciate all the cool tricks and clever parts sourcing that has gone into this project so far. Looking forward to seeing more, whenever that happens to be
