I have about 25 projects, 3-5 on the go at any given time...which is why any progress is barely measurable, lol!! Nice projects you have, there

The spoon test video looks legit to me, but if I was gonna fake a video like that, I would chrome some items with Molotow, fill a bath with isopropyl alcohol, dissolve the chrome, and then reverse the footage. *edit* I'm impressed that you've jumped feet-first into purchasing the equipment and chemicals! Not a whole lot of people willing to make that commitment, so we'll all be watching with great interest. *edit #2: In the original spoon test video, I can see an air bubble evacuating when the shot glass is lowered into the bath. This wouldn't happen if footage was reversed.

Another recaster alert! Page resins this time.
Spex84 replied to Paul Hettick's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
^^^^Somebody oughta tell those guys on Epay who sell fridge magnet copies of model car box art I spent some time today casting some parts...a couple scratchbuilt, a couple from my 3D prints, a couple mastered from kit parts, and honestly a bunch from various vintage kit sources that I wanted multiples of for my own projects. The funny thing is, as soon as I pour rubber to copy kit parts, I end up finding a decent deal on the kit in question, negating the need for resin and wasting all that mold rubber. Lol. Like, I made myself a bunch of blower end-plates based on my favorite kit parts, because I didn't have enough of them...and then lucked into a spare-parts lot that gave me enough kit blower casings and end plates for a lifetime. I don't sell copies of anything I've put a ton of effort into, because I just know somebody will re-cast it, and I'd rather be the only guy who has it. Ha! -
Any interest in NeoClassics?
Spex84 replied to Oldcarfan27's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
So many of these designs are sooo awful...that they're fascinating and would make a good model The Corvorado is a fave for its pimp-tastic-ness, but that white Excaliber roadster mentioned earlier is probably the best-looking car in this thread! Doesn't have any kit-car stink on it at all! A while back I encountered a VW "Bugatti". It was pretty legit, but I recognized the VW torsion-bar suspension instantly. Still a convincing and attractive package! Here's a pic from the net of a similar one: -

Did this cool truck ever get finished? -
1st gen Bronco Leadsled Kustom?
Spex84 replied to Impalow's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Sick, dude. I am pretty much speechless at how incredible that bike is. I didn't even notice the lack of footrests lol. How did you get the carbon fiber decals to wrap around the forks so well? Tons of Micro Sol?? -
Thanks for the photos! I was unaware of "forged carbon" as a surface finish trend. Not sure if I like it, but I don't have Lambo $$$ so I guess I don't need to make a final decision, lol. I'm always happy to see how modelers represent real finishes in scale. This one is tricky because of the way the carbon chunks catch the light...sometimes creative fakery is the best way to approximate an effect like that, as you've done here! As for the name of the material...the use of "forged" is used semi-metaphorically here, to mean "brought into existence". As in: "forged in a deeply collaborative environment" or "forged from only the highest quality materials". Diamonds are "forged" and require high temperature and pressure to create, so I'm imagining they were hoping to imply that the high-temp and pressure process they use to make these carbon parts produces similar strength. It's a good marketing hook, that's for sure.

Incredible; I'm so glad to see it successfully finished after so long! Such an inspirational project...the decals and badge detailing really take it to another level. I'll have to go back to the build thread to read about the headlights and taillights--they're very convincing! I enjoy the grass display base, too...it just seems fitting that a project like this gets a nice carpet to hang out on

Functional Aston Martin Valkyrie
Spex84 replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The Valkyrie looks really neat, but I'm keen to see and hear it driving! Lots of little weird jigs and jaunts in the design, but most of them seem to have a purpose. There's something weapon-like about the car, and it's not just the matte finish. It looks like something out of a sci-fi film. The trick "water-repellent" air filter makes me cringe though. Ever had a rain jacket or a tent start to admit moisture after the coatings have aged and become less effective? I'm sure their tech is far superior to my rainwear, but man oh man will it be expensive if water gets into that engine. Haha! -
Pininfarina Battista
Spex84 replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think it looks a lot like a McLaren P1, and that's a good thing! Love those flattened blade-like taillights. There are way too many cars running around these days that look pre-crushed, soI'm always glad to see a design that actually has well-resolved surfaces and lines that actually go somewhere. -
Well I'm intrigued! Step 1: learn Russian. Lol. *edit* All of the other videos I just watched appear to show electro-plating, requiring plastic objects to be coated with graphite paint before plating. This guy's doing something different. I'm wondering if it's a mixture similar to the spray-chrome products that have popped up in recent years.

Cool idea; you have my attention!

Very fancy so far! Looking forward to seeing more...

The scale and fidelity of these carbs is blowing my mind. Wow! Shapeways can't even print things as delicate as those carb linkages; they'd fail the "wall thickness" test. Super impressed over here. I'd give the carbs a very light dusting of primer, hit 'em with some metalizer, buff it, then an acrylic dark wash to accentuate the crevices, and then pick out the high points with a tiny brush and a lighter-colored metalizer paint...and then pick out the brass details like adjuster screws, etc. Thanks for showing us what's possible now. With a few $$$ for a good 3D printer, that is

Oops,I missed Saturday by a couple minutes

I saw that article this afternoon also! Same reaction--"aww, neat! That would make a really cool model!" Somebody will do it, if they haven't already

Thanks for the pics! That Cadillac in the lead photo is a weird beast! Pink n' fins, Nomad roof, large-diameter vogue tires. Interesting!

From what I've heard, the Revell parts packs weren't hot sellers even at the time. Re-issues of the engines are still pretty easy to find, and even the harder-to-locate parts packs don't tend to sell for much more than they would new, at today's prices...still, I'd love to see 'em anyway!
-
Wow, that's an impressive pile, Craig! //I recently picked up an AMT '57 T-bird mostly original in-box (missing engine only) and a stack o' parts pack engines, also an Aurora Grilles parts pack.

What non-auto model did you get today?
Spex84 replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Today I received this plane model for free, thanks to a neighbor who works at a thrift store and saves items that are heading to the trash because they're too damaged. In this case, the model had a water-damaged box. Glad it didn't get tossed out, because I plan to build a Star Wars-style speeder out of it! -
Nice save! The nicely detailed engine surprised me; it looks just right in that big engine bay. I wish these DeSoto kits were still commonly available; I'd buy one for sure.

How can I get a stroke, I'd like to build like this... All poor-taste jokes aside, WOW this model is awesome. It has tons of character, engaging detail, strong use of color contrast, effective use of decals (I like the Coa-cola sticker on the seat, and the labelled MSD box in particular). I also initially thought this was a larger-scale model, but I recognize that AMT '32 body! It reminds me of photos of 1960s competition models, maybe not 100% in-scale, but makes up for it in sheer exuberance. Definitely a model to be proud of! It deserves a display case or something to keep the dust off Saved to my inspiration folder...

This is a cool build so far! Love those spindle-mount front wheels. I'd suggest that maybe you need to make a multi-part floor. One part for the seats etc to sit on, narrowed so it can slip into the body, and a perimeter that can be added on later to cover the gap.

Phil, what kind of tires are you looking for? I briefly offered some 1/16 Firestone tall n' taller bias ply tires with artillery wheels on Shapeways...pulled them to tweak the 3D files and never got around to re-uploading them but I could! These photos are from forum user Rat-T, who ordered a set roughly this time last year.

Those rims from ModelBuilders Warehouse look goooood. SO smooth.
