Who wants to experiment with bulging tires on a hot stove? ? Liking the cutting techniques.
-
Thanks, mixing that with trying to be accurate. ? There are some cool cigar bands that have to be good for something on a model. Finished the tool bag! Made a few more tools on the fly, fan belt, and triangle box. Dang, that paint looks horrible!

I would call this break eggs to make an omelet stage. Used the hot-wire to cut apart the custom grill, to use for the door panels, and the driving lights. Also cut apart the glass with the wire cutter. Started fabricating the interior. Experimented denting the bed floor, which was pretty rough from working on a ranch. The Corian brake booster is painted. Cut out a window crank.

As the saying goes, a few million here, a few million there, and soon you are talking about real money. Thought that is what this forum is about. Oh man, you are in the wrong place! I think some of us egg each other one, as in raising the bar. But now you are thinking about it, aren't you? ? I also have a bench belt sander, could just hold and do it that way, and risk grinding some fingertips, but making a jig would alleviate that. ? Truck tires are hollow, so this might not work.

That's pretty neat! Already got the Fujimi bike with photo-etch spokes, was planning to do my own bike. ?

Good to know! Let me guess, illegal in California? ? Causes cancer if you eat it. *edit* Did a quick search, need to learn gauge thickness. Saw a pewter sheet, gotta buy a whole roll, not happening. Thank you 2X. ?

Mounting wheelbacks: glue solid or free spin?
89AKurt replied to crowe-t's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
? ? There you go! Reminds me, someone told me about just getting their car from the paint shop, parked way out at the edge of the grocery store parking lot. When they came out, car was not in the same spot, but over there, totaled by a dumb***. That's the full scale version. I started the Flat spotting tires topic. I made sure to search before posting, just watch, someone will dredge up this topic from the bowels of this forum. ? -
Another thread asked about gluing wheels on the axles. I brought up that I do, plus fixing a pet peeve of mine, toy appearance of tires sitting on the surface. IHMO it gives the appearance that the vehicle has weight, when the contact patch is flat. Go out and look at your personal vehicle, do you see completely round tires sitting on the ground? Military modelers really obsess about this, you can spend more money getting resin wheel/tires that bulge out too, the Bf-109 tires even has the correct toe-in angle. So why not do it to your cars? It also fixes the dreaded tripod when the assembled suspension is not perfectly built. For example, this Ford is Box Stock, it did the tripod, so did one tire more. You have to put it on the flat surface, get a worm's eye view, rock it, pick the "lowest" tire to do more. I use the Dremel with the sanding drum, working sideways (sucks when not glued on the axle and you go with the tread ?), and do a hollow in the center, so the contact is at the edges, otherwise you still see daylight. Lay down flat a sheet of rough sandpaper on the bench, do the front, then back wheels, again sideways. Sprinkle a little baking soda (talcum powder could work better) on the bench, shows the contact really well. Pet peeve fixed! ?

Mounting wheelbacks: glue solid or free spin?
89AKurt replied to crowe-t's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Exactly! I use the Dremel with sanding drum, go across the tire while holding it so it doesn't spin. ? Sort of hollow the flat too, so the contact is at the edges, if it's at all rounded still, won't be convincing. Then lay flat a sheet of rough sandpaper on the bench, do the front wheels, then back, sideways (again a reason to glue axles ?). I've had the dreaded tripod, so can fix it by doing the offending corner more. Fake it until you make it. Ever hear of a level? ? I so agree with this statement! ? Welcome! Perhaps I should start a specific topic about this. Mine is LET'S ROLL! ? -
I know right? Have relatives to finish first, VW Bus and Audi Quattro. Only then will I consider this: Ok, back to our regularly scheduled program, RUF RUF! Not roof rack

Mounting wheelbacks: glue solid or free spin?
89AKurt replied to crowe-t's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I do both. For Box Stock, I let them turn. For kit-bash, it could be totally different methods of mounting, so glue and then what is really important to me, flatten the contact patch to avoid the toy look. If tires still turn, that flat spot always ends up everywhere but down. To me, that flat spot is more important than turning wheels. Cats like turning wheels, just sayin'. ? -
Another crazy Barrett Jackson auction.. (Scottsdale)
89AKurt replied to NYLIBUD's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I used to enjoy attending these auctions (I live about 100 miles away). But ticket prices are ridiculous. And I'm kinda tired of looking at perfect trailer queens, and basically everything I can't afford, and do I ever look at the pictures again. I mean, come on, I know a mint was spent restoring that '55 Cameo, but a bag over it? ? -
I thought driving gloves was the thing, the reason I ask about mechanic gloves, Jay Leno was checking out a new Ferrari, which had *white* gloves with the spare, he laughed. A towel, hmmmm....... ? Trade in. I need to find this wine again, I'm running out of foil, it's a tough job but gotta do it. Sure would be cool to find the original manufacturer of this foil, and sell sheets for modeling. I looked in my scavenged parts stash, found this wheel (have several) that worked as a sewing pounce wheel, made a handle and found the perfect bolt and nut in that stash. I needed to modify the size, the instructions have the tools shown but not the same size, the other side is noticeably smaller so that was not going to work, so went off the jack and part I made. Added a flap based on one photo. After cutting, ran the wheel on the edges, needed to do twice. Then another foil scrap that's thinner than the wine foil, but much thicker than kitchen foil, was cut with the knife along a steel ruler. Punched holes with the needle for the buckle holes. Painted Testors 'leather' with some black added, the narrow straps are 'leather' with 'Africa Korps' added. I'll have to brush paint those straps after getting the tools attached.

They arrived today! THANK YOU. They look awesome. I can tell the masters had holes, but that sort of detail gets lost after the first casting. Drilled the distributors before painting.

About time I post who I've had satisfying exchanges with: peteski - cooler decals VanSpence - seats for his Honda Muncie - Corvette 1930fordpickup - Anglia Belugawrx - distributors Awesome to have this opportunity!

I never rattle can spray models, big stuff yes, models NO. Yellow is a tough color to paint, period. You did an awesome job on the wheels. Brush painting is another thing I only do as last resort.
-
No worries. ? Yes, so would I, but not this year. I think all manufactures tend to do this, some more than others.

On rare occasions, I have one. Holy cow! What bugs me, no gloves are included? I'm adding a pair, to cover paint globs on the carpet. ?

I have to stop checking in here, just making me want to break into another Porsche project. ? Coming along nicely!

1972 chevy pickup engine color?
89AKurt replied to Trace's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm on that forum, great resource. -
Made an engine jig. I learned from doing the '69 Chevy, that having a jig that is hard to control, such as spinning on the wire when I didn't need it, jiggling around like a spring, not being level, was almost more annoying than doing the wires. ? Got a scrap piece of wood (that's what round cut is about), used calipers to measure, made all cuts on the table saw. Turned a maple dowel with a slight taper for the driveshaft hole, zero slop. Glued into notches at the front mounts with Tacky glue. Not screwing around with this engine!

I was going to make the suggestion, but you already did it! This makes so much difference. Doing the decals will be fun. ?

The Fujimi Daytona instructions have a pattern. I have some wine bottle foil that is like a lead sheet with leather/vinyl texture. Thanks! ? After I made it, thought so too. ?
