  1. Hows this going?
  2. Aside from the difficulties you've discussed, this is the biggest hurdle I foresee. We do a poll every year (open to all) for the Cannonball CBP. Every time I have a model completed, I vote for myself. Even with no prizes on the line. I'm sure there are others that don't but I'll bet most do. If you have eight builders and everyone votes for themselves, who wins? If one guy knows he's skunked and votes for Joe Shmo, Joe wins with two votes. Is that fair? The only way to make this anywhere close to fair, is to open it up to public voting here on the forums. What is the time frame here? Two months? A year? The Cannonball runs for a year and we have a decent completion rate among the particapants. If the time frame is long enough, I might be interested.
  3. The Monogram 1/24 '53 Chevy has a very nice I6 with some go-fast goodies. Being 1/24 it's a little big for 1/25 but it looks great other Monogram stuff like this '39.
  4. I've been using Krylon primer under all sorts of paint for years with no issues. As for Future, that Pledge is the right stuff, but their are better alternatives. Testors Wet Look clear would be my choice.
  5. From this guy here in Tampa, I'd like to congratulate the Blackhawks and their fans for a great win. The team played like champions and deserved it, sad as I am to say it. We'll get you next year.
  6. I think we can put this silly thought to bed now. I think, and this proves, you've talent in spades my friend. Very nice, clean work.
  7. Great looking models Peter. Well done.
  8. It's sorta human nature to define a thing we enjoy. And car guys are worse than most about it. I have seen the most vehement discussions/arguments/donnybrooks over the definition of hot rod, street rod, street machine, kustom (this one was fun, "what's custom and what's kustom?) and last but not least, "what contitutes a muscle car?" And these have all been on one modeling forum or another.
  9. Pat, thanks for the reply. This will be happening on my bench eventually. Likely something smaller though. The upcoming Revell '29 roadster comes to mind.
  10. Yep I agree. However there were a number if issues that had me doubting. The windshield doesn't look like the stock materials or angle. No vent windows either. No examples I saw online had the red reflectors in the wheel centers. I'm thinking its some sort of Corvette based kit car.
  11. It has potential. The pipes gotta go though.
  12. Hmm...............well it's got plenty of wheelbase so how about something like this? An Allison V12?
  13. A tourist in New York asked a street musician how to get to Carnagie Hall. The musician smiled at him and said, "Practice man, practice." You have talent. You need skills. Those can be learned.
  14. On Photobucket you can resize everything you download automatically.
  15. Yeah, but man he had a heck of a run. Per IMBD, he had 281 acting credits! He did villians better than anyone. His role as Scaramanga in The Man With the Golden Gun, will always be my favorite. Not many actors can boast that they were still in demand in Hollywood all the way into their 90's.
  16. Nice project. How about some billboard "hemi" decals? http://firebird-designs.ecrater.com/p/20357839/1968-roadrunner-hemi-billboards-decal-set-125 I've bought three sets of declas from this vendor, but have yet to use them. They look top-notch.
  17. The filler door has me confuzzled. According to this mock up, the drivers seat is behind the filler door. Wouldn't the turtle deck be a more logical spot for it?
  18. Wow. I've been waiting for someone to try this. I did just a '34 Ford hood for the same efffect. I love the look of it, and would love to try it. I have some questions, if you don't mind? How many sheets did it take to cover the whole car? Did you do it in large panels or smaller strips? How well does the overlaps of foil pieces disappear and did the wash help that or hinder that? Was keeping large pieces of foil wrinkle free as you worked them, as frustrating as I imagine? What grit sandpaper did you use?
  19. Nice work Al. I've got a new body for the '49 Ford. I'm going to throw some putty tonight and do some clean up. I plan for a flat burgundy primer paint job.
  20. Mee too. I would drive the wheels off that and grin at every hater that sneered at me.
  21. Yeah, without a doubt, "wow" factor plays a part. A lot of people will get dazzled by the deeply polished paint and not notice the crooked wheel or the visible ejector pin marks. I've not seen too many inexperienced judges though, happily.
  22. That's true for me as well. Also as well as the fact that I could call the build at the beginning of the show. 68 Charger? Lets see he's gonna use a crate engine, replace the suspension, lower the car with 20" wheels, one-offs of course. Then he's gonna shave the door handles, side marker lights, side mirrors, then narrow and pull in the bumpers. Then he's gonna do a two tone paint job, where one color is silver and the other, the owners favorite color. Interior will be black with piping that matches the non-silver paint color, with Foose badges everywhere. At the end of the show, the only surprise was what the owners favorite color was. I like Chips style and his hands-on work ethic, but frankly predictability isn't what I look for in a car builder.
  23. The unfortunate answer is - yes. But not in all contests. Like anything else some are good, some aren't. So I advise is to go to all the contests you can. Find out which ones you can rely on to be on the level and fair, and which ones you just go to for the vendors. I've got four Florida clubs all putting on shows within a two hour drive. I only participate in three. To everyone - don't get discouraged by getting skunked. Don't get PO'ed and swear off contests because one didn't appreciate your work, or you lost to the judges brother-in-law. The only one losing out is you. Because I'll happily win the award you might have, if you'd been there. Get out there and find the good clubs that put on a fair events and keep working on getting better. And if you think a model is worthy - bring it. The model I started this thread with eventually did win an award on it's first visit (and last) to a local contest. It was a good day for me.
