The Bustle Bomb. Cool! Just last night I was in the garage throwing away some old car magazines, flipping through them (as one does) before they went in the trash. I came across an article in a 1984 Hot Rod mag that was a detailed retrospective on the Bustle Bomb. A very unique and innovative machine. Worth the read.

What Are You Building Today?
Bainford replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Picking away at some scratchbuilt interior details for a Fujimi Lotus Esprit S1. The rest of the build is done, just got to get the cockpit sorted. -
I was looking at the old AMT 60 Ford F-100 a couple nights ago and noticed it has a tri-power on a Y block. Probably not an easy kit from which to find parts, and I never really looked at it with an eye towards accuracy, but some bits of that kit were molded more accurately than I thought. Just tossing that out there...

Great story, thanks for that. That would have been a thrilling ride. It's interesting how some people are super protective of their classic or vintage cars, and yet others drive them like they were meant to be, and also appreciate just what the experience of offering a ride to an enthusiastic stranger really means to them. He sounds like my kind of car guy. I have a Lotus Europa, which is no V-16 Caddy (pretty much the opposite, actually) but to some sports car enthusiasts is a very exciting and uncommon sight. On numerous occasions I have offered rides to strangers who are particularly excited to see the car, which they always really appreciate. Also, at car shows I often let kids touch it and sit in it. There are no "Do Not Touch" signs on my car. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story.

Gorgeous old Caddy. There is something about the phrase "V-16 roadster" that gets the heart pumping.

I have heard that multiple dunks in brake fluid can eventually turn styrene brittle. When I first heard of using brake fluid as a paint stripper in the late 80s, I was skeptical so I put some in a small bottle and tossed in a junk wheel. I left it there for years and it appeared fine, though I don't recall if I actually checked it for brittleness.

Hhmmm... shades of JoHan?

I've never seen the 500, but I frequently use Mr Surfacer 1000 and 1500. It's kind of like a heavy primer, though I use it as a light filler. Fills scratches and knife or panel scriber slips really well, and feathers out excellent. If I'm doing any filling with spot putty, after sanding it down I will apply a layer of Mr Surfacer and sand that to smooth the panel and feather everything out.

Good looking '58. I really like the AMT kit. For an old tool it is very detailed and builds up well. I built one as a kid, and have lately been thinking of building a replica of my father's first car, a two tone black/white car which seems an uncommon colour combination, but looks great.

Very cool '34. I like the style and the colour really makes it pop. A nice, tidy build. Well done.

Very impressive work. I am very interested in observing your process.

A stunning build of a gorgeous car. You have done an excellent job of getting this thing together. And that paint colour is just mouth watering. Absolutely beautiful.

Moebius /Model king 65'Mercury Cyclone A/FX
Bainford replied to Mr mopar's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
At first blush, I must disagree. The Mobious Cammer shown above looks to be fair at best. The shape of the cam covers is too squared off and 'hard edged'. This is yet another set of cam covers that omits the 'Ford SOHC' script (as mentioned). But perhaps the worse offense is the shape and possibly location of the spark plug indentations. Details look a bit soft or vague on the rest of the engine, but the cam covers are parts box swimmers, as would be the intake, etc.. Thankfully we have been blessed with numerous Cammers over the years that are much better then these, and a couple of sets that have been very well done. I'll be picking up one of these kits for sure, but if I build it as a Cammer, I'll definitely be using a different engine (or at least different cam covers). It's a shame, really, but as said, there are other choices out there. I'm quite thankful just to have a decent '65 Comet. Now, if Round2 would just backdate their '67 to a '66, I'll be a happy camper -
Very cool build. Lots of top notch detailing. In the 1:1 world I have no interest at all in a v-8 Z, but your build is nicely done, and I really like the look of the JDM Zs. Great aggressive look.

Does it have to be tube? Michaels has some 1/8" aluminum armature wire that is soft and bends well.

How many kits do you buy in one day
Bainford replied to Spruslayer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, no where near 78, but I bought 11 kits one day whilst on a business trip. I was working in a city with a decent hobby shop that had a great selection, much better than my hometown LHS. I was being paid a per diem, and I was on that job for three weeks, so I ate frugally and saved my per diem money, and had a heck of a shopping spree at the hobby store near the end of the trip. In addition to the 11 new kits I bought several sheets of Slixx decals, a few modelling tools, and numerous bits and pieces. It was a great day. -
Great looking race car. Sharp and tidy.

Cool build. That thing looks wicked. Looking forward to seeing the next one.

Yup, I agree as well. The best I've ever seen this old Revell kit built up. I love the spoon idea for the flares. All round an outstanding build. Very well done.

Re-engineering Monograms Lotus Esprit...new update!
Bainford replied to Dann Tier's topic in WIP: Model Cars
The carpet piping looks great. I tried this same thing using .010" plastic strip on my current build (curiously, also a Lotus) and the effect was better than I expected. It's a very subtle detail, but the minds-eye really picks up on it. I never thought of using a fine solder. The results look spot on. -
The future of Motorsports ?
Bainford replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Really!? As a lifelong motorsport fanatic, I personally disagree. I certainly do not want to see anyone get hurt. In fact, a good amount of the motorsport events I attend are local, and I know many of the players to some degree, and some of them I know very well. They are friends. I know their names. I know their families. Sometimes they do get hurt (or worse), and it is always an emotional, heart wrenching event. I never want to see that. On-track incidents can be exciting, but generally speaking, crashes are boring. They interrupt the flow of good racing, which is precisely the reason I attend motorsport events. If the racing is great, I'm there. If I want to see crashing, I'll go to a demo derby, which I don't because they are pretty lame. Anything that disrupts the racing is unwanted. Just my personal views. -
Tough looking Morgan. I wasn't too sure about the colour at first, but it works well with the black wheels & grill. Nicely done.
