GM , in my opinion , would've been better off IF they would've made the Holden/Caprice available to the public ! When are the manufacturers going to get it through their close-minded-think-tank-focus-group-college-boy heads that AMERICANS DON'T WANT FRONT-WHEEL-DRIVE LITTER BOXES !!! One of GM's worst moves was the dumping of the B-Body , U.S.-built , U.S.-market Caprice ! They had 'em so dialed-in by 1993 -- and esp. in that final year -- and then POOF ! As far as Fo-Mo-Co is concerned ; enough with the self-parking-hybrid-plug-in-wrong-wheel-drive garbage ! Their moment of stupidity was when they announced the dumping of the Crown Victoria ! What was its "replacement" ? Another car with its engine facing the wrong way or a frickin' SUV with some ridiculous V6 ! WOW ! Chrysler ? A shadow of its former self . More junky bird cage lining vehicles ! The Neon / PT were okay , but a major pain to service --- how about them there passenger-side engine mounts ? Replace 'em with more trash that's made by yet another off-shore company ( you can smell the Pb in the paint ! ) . It's too bad that their LX-Body "A38" (or whatever its new sales code is) Police Pursuit was so cramped . On the contrary ; the CHP is seemingly dumping their fleet of "Eco-Boost" Explorers and are replacing them with... ...Charger Police Pursuit cars ! Civet Scat Coffee and Penny Farthings indeed ! Hahahahaha !

After that dark cloud descended-upon Rosen , et al. , in 1974 , Joel began selling his modified vehicles as " For Off-Highway or Export Use Only . Sold 'As-Is'. " , which kept the EPA ,et al. , off his back .

The engine in the AMT kit may be built to 'represent' the 350hp 396 as well (esp. 1970-c.1972) . The presence of an A/C setup negates an L78 , as that wasn't an option with that engine (correct my info if it's incorrect) . That same AMT 'generic' Mark IV is in the 1970 Monte Carlo SS-454 as well . That setup represents the 360hp LS-5 engine (and , perhaps , the 1971-1972 LS-5 as well) .

If I Ran Revell....

I rather like your idea , Herr Snake . I've always "overthought" the concept of interchangeability of kits ; I've always thought about ( for example ) : - 'Generic' 1970-1976 Chrysler A-body fastback . The builder chooses which year Duster , Demon , or Dart Sport they desire to build by purchasing a separate set of fenders , tail panels , interior , etc. , etc. Not very cost-effective from a manufacturing standpoint ( and , equally , price point ) . Your idea sounds better and certainly more effective from engineering , tooling , and pricing points . -

One would need a college degree ( I buy mine by-the-roll ) in order to abscond with $22B . That's the problem : too many college kids 'running' things ! Okay... back to our regularly scheduled programme... -
Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take

No problem , man . It's an excellent book ! I don't have Oldham's Confessions of a Muscle Car Tester ( I believe that's its title...?) , but I will eventually get a copy (out-of-print + big money !) . I miss ol' Joe . I was in contact with him ( via Facebook ) until his untimely death ; I keep in infrequent contact with his son Scott . I love the WIP that another forum member is working on ---- the '69 Phase III "RS" Chevelle and its stablemate '69 Phase III Camaro ; his '68 "Prototype" is looking keen , too ! -

It's a fantastic book ; lots and lots of photos , vintage ads , history , and wonderful text . Martyn Schorr was the brainchild behind High Performance CARS magazine ; he's the book's author. Not sure if it's still in print . -

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take

According to "Baldwin-Motion : Tales of a Supercar Builder" ( Martyn L. Schorr ,et al. , c.2012 ) , that car in-particular had its 'SS' emblems replaced with 'RS' as per the owner's request . It's also the only B-M '69 Chevelle whose original 396 was retained ! Yes , it was built to Phase III specs ; the owner insisted upon keeping the car 396-powered . The owner was ( is ? ) a wealthy Rancher in Mexico ; he ordered two Motion cars , one of which was this car , the other was a Rallye Green Phase III 427 Camaro . -

Not only does it state Rally Wheel (only one wheel ?) , but the (fugly , 80's throw-up throwback) car is also right-hand-drive ! -
Some of you are familiar with 60's Garage Punk pioneers The Pretty Things and their most-recognised songs Midnight to Six , Man and LSD ( *moderators : I'm not advocating the latter ; just mentioning the song's name ) . Here's a gem from Emotions (1967) , which is , I believe , the follow-up album to S.F. Sorrow (whose theme gave birth to The Who Tommy , and other concept albums) . Without further ado :

Quite lovely Nova there , Mike ! What colour is that ? Is it available in aerosol ( I try to avoid air brushing as much as possible ) ?
-
Nice rescue ! The grille / headlamps is one of the custom pieces from the '53 F-100 , no ? Either way , it fits perfectly with the rest of the mods ! Love that colour --- Tamiya Gun Metal ?
-
To my eyes , the AMT 1968 El Camino lines look spot-on (especially when compared to that diecast '70 SS) . Nice rescue job on that bad boy ! That's how I remember them looking when I was a kid / teenager : 2nd or 3rd paint job (the climate here is rough on paint) in a "close-enough" colour ; aftermarket wheels and tyres ; a new vinyl top( in a non-stock grain ) ; and a painted bed (oftentimes , "spackle" paint --- that grey stuff with red , black , and blue specks in it ) . As a side note ; I've got to see if the custom parts from the AMT 1969 SS-396 convertible (or hardtop) may possibly work on the newer-tool 1968 El Camino .

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
1972coronet replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
My only concern in-so-far-as the body is concerned is the moulded-on trim ( grille-to-rear-bumper ) . When / if Revell updates this to a 1969 , that trim will have to go (although , I suspect that the 300 Deluxe retained that trim for '69... someone please correct me if I'm wrong) . Would've been nice as a separate set ; would've made the update easier for Revell . I'm just concerned about ending up with a 1969-1968 Dart body ; that has remains of the Mr. Norms 1968 GSS 440 vinyl top trim on the C-pillars at the rain gutters . -
Thanks for these photos and mock-ups , Bill . Considering that this kit has its origins in the c.1982 release of the 1970 BOSS 429 , it holds up well . Certainly , that 1st issue from over thirty-five years ago was quite nice to begin with ( the chassis was definitely one of its stronger points ; unusual for the time , especially when it came to Monogram's offerings ) . I built so many of those freakin' Calypso Coral '70 BOSS kits that I could build 'em in my sleep ! Just a fun , fun kit . Last one of these that I built was the c.1994 issue of the 1970 BOSS 302 (moulded-in-yellow) . As a modified-reissue ( in es. ) , it was a fine kit ; loved the Autolite Inline Four Barrel option ; and, the mufflers that had FoMoCo insignia and part numbers was a nice addition .

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
1972coronet replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Thanks for the photos and text , Bill ! Looks like a homerun for Revell and for its customer base ; it's about time that someone tooled-up an all-new 1968-1972 Chevrolet A-body . I , too , was "perplexed" by the presence of above-cowl-resting-pose wipers (in addition to moulded-on wipers !) . But , one can hope for a 300 Deluxe when the 1969 follow-up is tooled... The Mark IV engine looks nice ---I only wish that a TH-400 was included as an option. Otherwise , it's nice to see a 396 / 427 without an A.I.R. Pump ( this'll be a candidate for the Nickey Camaro that I've got waiting in the rafters ) . -

That's what I meant to specify : the now-obscure Stage V hemi conversion for B / RB engines . I'd neglected to mention that as I'd presumed (however incorrectly) that no one would remember that conversion (especially since Direct-Connection had Stage V heads which were of wedge origin (can't remember if those were angle-plug heads or not) .
