The Zen of Model Building
Tom Geiger replied to afx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
meraki [may-rah-kee] (adjective) This is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love -- when you put "something of yourself" into what you're doing, whatever it may be. Interesting! I thought it would be Japanese, surprised it’s Greek. -
Attention like goldfish!

Looks nice! There’s nothing better than a model as a gift!

I recently saw this at Walmart.. I was excited at first, then I noticed how large it is! I would’ve bought it in a minute if it scaled out. I did get a chuckle out of the Lucky Charms theme.

Did we all kill the golden calf? Their intent was for ladies to fill up their carts with craft items and give a deep discount on ONE item!

Yea! Today is Stick Day! The town came and took my bags and barrels of sticks and leaves! It was pleasant out the past few days as I cleaned up the property! I had a bunch of bags in the shed already from cleaning up the pool area a few weeks ago.

The Zen of Model Building
Tom Geiger replied to afx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I like different perspectives. I enjoy the build process. I like to put a lot of care and thought into my builds, and try to increase my skills and do something unique on every model. But I do cherish my finished models. It’s like my miniature Jay Leno collection. These are MY cars and I have them all on display in an old China cabinet I just invested $200 in adding new shelves! These are my babies! I’ve only given away a few, ones I specifically built to give away. The rest of them are dear to me! -

Down memory lane for fun

As a kid I was rather imaginative but also cautious. I would imagine someone going down the stairs of a tricycle, but I’d enlist a clueless test pilot to do so. I’d watch from the sidelines and when Jimmy went head over heels.. I’d note the conclusion of that experiment! With blowing stuff up, I was more a spectator than participant. I was more the guy who once everyone left, I’d gather up the pieces for my parts box! -
Did you go through the basics like rebooting the phone by turning it off and on again? Recently my wife’s iPhone was doing odd things. She didn’t know how to turn it off.. she thought logging out (turning the screen off) was it. I rebooted it, dumped a load of her photos to the computer and updated the software. Her issue was that her phone was too full, and couldn’t even do software updates.

Cool! I have an old junker kit that I was building into some kind of commercial Grapes of Wrath type truck. I used two of my chrome wire wheels and tires on one of my rat rods, and a pair of those tires fit (with a little carving) onto Monogram 1/24 Model A wheels for beefier tires on my beach racer.

Kits they never issued- but should have

I doubt we’ll see a Checker Cab. R&R did offer them, maybe find on eBay. It would be cool if Round 2 backdated the Jeepster kit. There wouldn’t be a lot of work there! Id also like to see them take the 55-57 Chevy pickup and give us 58-59 pickups. Again, not a heck of a lot of work to do! -
Down memory lane for fun

I was taught by my father to work for my money by my dad early on. It set me up well for life, so I instilled the same values n my daughters and they both are frugal adults who own their own homes today! As I posted earlier that during my modeling years I lived on a US Army post in Germany. Models came to me either via gifts from stateside grandparents or from the Autoworld catalog. I mowed the lawns in our housing area and washed cars for a dollar each. I had my well worn Autoworld catalog book marked and since I had already used the order forms, I had future orders all hand written out on loose leaf paper. Each time I reached the goal of one of the order totals, I’d give my cash to my father to write a check and mail in the order. It took 60-90 days to receive the boat shipped orders. I believe I had several orders in progress a month or so apart. Every day on my way home from school, I’d walk part my father’s unit and inquire if I had a package. The soldiers there were quite accustomed to telling me “No Thomas, no package for you today.” Every so often one arrived and it was a happy event! They’d buzz me in and I’d open the package there because the young GIs were interested to see what I got! On occasion my father, as much as I got a tongue lashing about the attention I paid to my models vs school work, would sneak a kit into my order. And Autoworld always included extras like a sheet of their decals or license plates. I thought they did it because I was a special customer from Germany, but later learned everyone got them! Those were the days! -

A couple tools I had a hand in creating, NNL East give aways! We wanted to give folks something they could use! The duster was a big hit. I still get a thrill when I see someone using one while setting their models up at a show. We designed the ruler and had it printed by a specialty company that did measuring devices. One side is 1/24 and the other 1/25. We came up with the centering device to differentiate it from anything on the market. It does come in handy. We thought we’d share these far and wide to convince people to work to scale. Note that it’s all inches, so nobody has to work with inch/feet conversions. I’ve been involved with engineering and design my whole career and worked with scale rulers on the drafting board. So working in scale in my hobby came naturally to me. It’s essential if you scratch build!

Looks great! In blue it reminds me of my old Matchbox car!

I still need to have the windshield replaced on my Hyundai. Back when it happened I called three places and never got a call back! Then I decided to wait until the weather was above freezing so the sealant would dry properly. I guess I should get to it.
