m3fan Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 This Ferrari 250GT Spyder California was a rebuild that I first completed 20 plus years ago. It was not a bad build but the orange peel in the paint was terrible. When a couple of trim pieces fell off I decided to see how far I could take it apart and it seemed to cooperate. I kept the overall look it had before but lowered the stance and added MG brand wire wheels and tires.they almost have a big and little kind of look.the paint was an experiment using Tamils mica red then clear red and finally red russet pearl in clearcoat. I also added some 3D badges from model factory hiro and replaced the kit seats for something I had in my parts bin. Although not perfect I’m much happier with this on the shelf now. thanks for looking.
89AKurt Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Gorgeous! Not familiar with MG wheels. Very nice restoration, and considering how scarce the kits are, about all one can do.
Spottedlaurel Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 A very worthwhile restoration exercise, I think it looks great. The mica paintwork nicely brings out the shape.
Pete75 Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 She's a real beauty! Love the colour & gleaming chrome ?
Gramps46 Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Excellent rescue. Thanks for sharing the photos.
Claude Thibodeau Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Hi Russell! Great rescue indeed. Bravo! Now with the question: you mention pearl in the clear coat. Did-you mix and airbrush it? Or used Tamya's Pearl clear as an intercoat before the final clear? Just curious... CT
m3fan Posted January 25, 2021 Author Posted January 25, 2021 Thanks for all the replies! Claude, to answer your question I picked up from a craft store years ago a whole assortment of pearl powders. I add some to my clear then airbrush as a mid coat then go over that with straight clear. hope this helps.
BeakDoc Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Fan-dang-tastic! Purist or not, that is a beautiful restoration.

In my case, the brand is Jacquard, if I remember correctly. Good product. I bought a quart of their powder directly from the factory two years ago, and used it with great results on a 1/1 car. CT
Rich Chernosky Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Nothing wrong with this build. I think it looks great. The wheels really make it. (yah...and I like my Ferrari's too)
Phildaupho Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Great restoration Russ. Really like your colour choice. As someone else mentioned - not familiar with MG wheels
Fish_65 Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 That turned out great Russell. Nice work ? I was half expecting an LS engine in it judging by your title though ?

m3fan Posted January 26, 2021 Author Posted January 26, 2021 LOL! Good point I chose the title based on the non factory colour and “ hot rod” stance but thanks for looking 39 minutes ago, Jonathan said: Same here - I think it is a great looking build. Oldcarfan27 Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I have one of those kits. I've always had plans to make a Ferris Bueller replica from it. I know it wasn't a real Ferrari, but it was SUPPOSED to be one in the movie, so why not? Yours shows how close it looks to the movie car!
Demerovingian Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Excellent work! Great paint job and detail.
Steve H Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Hi Russell, another beautiful paint job sir. I’m no purist, that paint colour looks amazing! Shiny. I’m with the others, I was expecting tubs and a hood scoop! Cheers, Steve
