Just eyeballing the two together the red ones are 2 frog hairs longer and maybe one frog hair wider than the AMT. So, I guess they are the Monogram ZZ-Top bodies. Thanks for the answers.

I was rummaging through some boxes trying to find some parts. When I opened my AMT 34 Ford kit I found three bodies. One is the stock 5 window coupe. The other two are factory chopped 3-window coupes, molded in red with opening trunk lids. What kit are the two red ones from?

Unfortunately, this had to be done to slow down kit pilfering. Several years ago (last century) I found four opened kits at a Roses store. I approached the manager and she discounted the kits by 60%. I made out fairly well one was complete, but the others were missing valuable pieces: Eddie Hill's dragster rear tires and wheels, etc. A few months later I was in the same store and they only had two kits on the shelf, both were hard to sell kits, can't remember exactly what they were. Happened to see the manager and asked her about the lack of kits, "We were losing too much money on shoplifting (pilfering) so we are no longer carrying them". Have also bought pilfered kits from Michael's, WalMart (when they sold kits), and a couple of other stores. I was in Hobby Lobby one day and found a Revell 'T' Roadster kit. When I picked it up I noticed the bottom of the box had been slit open leaving the shrinkwrap around the outside intact. They sold it to me for 40%. When I got it home the only thing missing was the roadster body, big score on parts. I've noticed lately Hobby Lobby will have kits with the shrinkwrap removed and the box will be taped. Makes me wonder if someone bought it and once looking inside decided they did not want it or was it a kit someone opened to pilfer. If the latter case did the clerk that inventoried the kit know what they were looking at before they taped it shut. Sorry about the rant, but my first kit had only a piece of decorative tape over each end (AMT 1960 Mercury hardtop annual).

Light show Photography: '65 T-bird (RE POSTED)
TarheelRick replied to Falcon Ranchero's topic in Auto Art
Interesting piece of photography work. I have seen this and similar forms of photography before but have never tried it. Some of the pieces I have seen were very overdone IMHO but these are right on the mark. Thanks for sharing. Where did you acquire the light pens? -
NuNu Audi Sport Quattro S1

Beautiful rally car build. Still needs lots of mud and a few fender dents. Happened to watch a YouTube video yesterday of some rally crashes. Those cars fly and get extremely dirty. Just kidding about the mud and dents, like it just the way it is. -

Excellent build, especially like the fade paint and with rattlecans no less. Overall, beautiful build and attention to details. -
One for the model railroaders
TarheelRick replied to Earl Marischal's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Used to be a thing to do on a no-date Saturday afternoon - "sit around watching the grass grow and listening to the car rust." -
Some very interesting photos. That 50 Chevy out in the woods had been used as some form of race car or "cool" street car, the rear fenders have been radiused. The pickup on the sap line could possibly be saved - with a lot of work as could the Chevy depending upon how much floor pan is left. One thing I noticed is the absence of bullet holes in the cars. Around here any car abandoned in the woods was a prime target to practice your Bonnie & Clyde ambush moves.

One for the model railroaders

The way I read the article the Vert-a-pac worked as designed. The Vega was a seriously failed experiment, says the Ford Pinto owner. -
Ace, I saw an ad just the other day showing a Tesla with a built-in rumble generator (for a better term). This system plays ICE sounds that exit through a speaker system in the phony exhaust pipes, and the sound varies with the acceleration of the car. If they are going to that much trouble to sound like an ICE, then go ahead and put an ICE in it.

If the title says Gasser I am all in. I like the modifications you are doing to this kit. Although I think it will be closer to a Pro-Mod than a gasser when finished. But then a Pro-Mod is just a Gasser on steroids.

As the others have said, to me it depends on the finished product. Right now I have the AMT '61 Ford Styline kit (curbside) that I am building with the extreme custom parts in the kit. The nose will be much longer than stock, so it would require lengthening the hood if it were opened as well as finding inner fenders, etc. On the other hand, I am also working on a full custom '51 Ford convertible. That kit comes with an opening hood, I have extensively modified that area, but I have also made sure it is opened because I want to show the custom flathead engine. As I said it depends on what I want the end product to represent.

Don Schumacher "Revell's Super Shoe " Vega Funny Car
TarheelRick replied to THarrison351's topic in Drag Racing
Extremely nice Funny Car build. Looks like you have tamed the 'old-mold beast' very well. Schumacher was one of my favorite funny car drivers. Way back in the days of match-racing at local dragstrips he and another came to our local strip. He was driving the Stardust 66-67 (?) Charger. On the second of their scheduled three runs he came out of the hole hard, went sideways and sent pieces of fiberglass flying. Wish I could have got hold of some of those pieces. -
Building the Streamliner from the AMT Double Dragster kit
TarheelRick replied to OldNYJim's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Really enjoying what you are doing with this build. This kit was my holy grail for many years, but they were well beyond my modeling budget. Imagine my joy when they were rereleased. I bought two of them immediately, one tin box and the other regular cardboard. I have opened the tin box one since it was the first one I bought, it is still virgin and the other is still sealed - so much for holy grail. Keep those updates coming. -
What did you see on the road today?
TarheelRick replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Coming off the interstate yesterday afternoon saw a 55-57 Chevy pickup pulling a small camper trailer heading the other direction. It was a bit lower than stock, but not much, painted a dull red. Couldn't tell if it was faded paint or actually that color. -
Mighty fine looking Mustang (but then all of them are). Love those super-stockers. Nice clean build.

Extremely nice Shelby Mustang. Paint looks to be velvet smooth, sweet build. -
Super nice build, beautiful paint. Really like the looks of those older FX cars with their skinny slicks. Fun to watch then race also.

Ollie's strike again
TarheelRick replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A new Ollie's just opened this past week in the small town close to me. I used to have to drive 60 miles round trip now it is only 20. Also, not sure of the presence of model builders in my local area so I may have a better selection of unpicked over kits when they do get them. While on the topic of Ollie's I found some Black & Decker spray paint the last time I was up there. Anyone familiar with it? It comes in the basic colors, a couple of semi-flats and white and black primers, costs $5.99 for a regular size can. I picked up one each of the primers and will give them a try once I can find my worktable again. -
Last week stopped by the TMobile kiosk at Sam's Club. I have decided I am tired of Verizon playing juggle the numbers with my bill. Since it was a kiosk the agent did not have phones available, only the display ones. Did all the paperwork and the agent told me I should have my new phone within 2-3 days. It has been a week and I still do not have the phone. Called the number on my paperwork got a very terse message "The person you are calling cannot be reached at this time" and then hung up. I called the kiosk agent, he gave me another number. Here is where I am going to make reference to something that may result in a suspension. I am not a racist, my late wife was a foreign national with a heavy accent. Could not understand but maybe every fourth or fifth word. We quickly got involved into a circular conversation. I guess if they ask the same question enough times the answer they are receiving may change. Anyway, I finally got the gist that I needed another number but was unsure what it was. Called the kiosk again, after a short discussion we decided the number was a PIN I had set up. Called TMobile again got a different, at least different name, individual. The circular conversation began again. I finally got her to understand the PIN number. She replied, "That account has been cancelled." "How can it be cancelled it has not been activated yet." "You did not reply to email verifying account." "I never received an email." "You will need to go back to the store and resubmit your request." It is a 60-mile round-trip to the nearest TMobile. I am still a Verizon customer.

That is one beautiful transformation. Really like that color, it shows those beautiful body lines so well. Great build. -
WIP: Custom AMT 1:25 1964/65 Chevy El Camino
TarheelRick replied to JNordgren42's topic in WIP: Model Cars
You have a good start on what should become an excellent build, especially if it looks like the 1:1. Some very nice 3D work. My 1:1 grail is a '65 SS 327 4-speed. Prefer a sedan but would settle for an El Camino. Keep those updates coming.
