Nice choice of wheels/tires, and glad to see the body clean!
-
Very imaginative stuff here! If I may suggest one thing, I'd lose the rear "wheel "shaped thingies, they look so bulky they throw off the balance of your design, and to me they still look too much like wheels/tires, where the rest of the vehicle is way out there! Compare your treatment of the front wheel area to the rear - the front is much more creative. I do like the VTOL aspect of the rear area, just not the tire-shaped blobs.. I only comment because I really LOVE this kind of creative stretch of our hobby, and want to see this design soar! Here's a thought; take a couple of 1/72 A-10's turbine housings (2 kits worth-can be cheap snap-tites) using one grouped pair per side, attached to the rear sides in the wheel area, connected to each other by a rod so they actually rotate down and back as needed. Add rivets, fins, pipes, hoses, and antennae to taste. Fun stuff!

'58 Fairlane 500 Semi-Custom! Finished at Last!
bisc63 replied to John Goschke's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Another reason I'm following this one - it was my dad's favorite car of all he ever owned. He swears to this day NOTHING rode and drove so fine as his 4-door yellow and white '58! -
Terry; will do, and THANKS! Mark, that paint is taking way too long to strip. Is it enamel-based? Acrylic -based? Reason I ask, if it's acrylic based paint, it might not come off with the purple stuff, BUT, it will come off in a soakig of isopropyl alcohol. ( Get the stronger solution) If it IS enamel based, get a one-gallon ziplock bag or an airtight plastic food container, then spray the body liberally with oven cleaner (wear vinyl gloves), seal it in your bag/container and watch the paint wash off in a day or two. It might need two applications, but the stuff is strong on tough paint! Good luck...

Agree that this roof was off, but your changes have yielded GREAT improvements, and I applaud your sticking with this project; it will be worth it! -

Check out the hubcap selection in these 2 kits; maybe they are close enough?
-
Those are some nice hubcaps, for sure; I can't help but think I've seen something similar if not the same, in a kit in my stash. Looks SO familiar; might be a custom option in an old AMT kit... Never cared much for sun visors on cars, they disrupt the flowing lines, but to each his own! On another note, that deep red is bee-yooo-tee-ful on that car!
-
Very nice, that blue was a great choice!

Love all the custom goodies in the truck kit, Ive got a couple of WIPs using them on other period customs(not the truck). Very nice kit for its age. The car is also nice, as others have mentioned, I just recently picked up the Indy Pace Car version of that same kit. Get to building!

2 cents worth: First, touch up the engine, it looks fine; add some plug wires, etc.. it will pop! Second, chrome pieces should look just fine against new paint. Third, I like the wide whites, but the hubcap leaves a lot to be desired; I have an extra set of AMT 63 mpala SS hubcaps you are welcome to, if you like. ( Very attractive, similar design to the 58) I love this body style and will follow your progress eagerly! PM me your address if you want the 'caps.

Ha! Would never have guessed that was school bus yellow; it looks lighter and brighter in pics! Looks perfect for the car, though. Build on, brother!

A couple of ways to get 'em dull. First and most obvious it strip them (overnight soak in either: bleach, oven cleaner, or purple stuff) and paint with dull aluminum paint, that will give them a grayish, "used" look. Second method is to overcoat the chrome with some Testors Dullcote; that will yield a cleaner, slightly brighter finish, similar to that "new from the box" look of freshly cast aluminum. Really a matter of taste and desired look. Do some quick test on parts box wheels/hubcaps, or even scrap chrome sprue. Keep us posted!

Love that yellow, may I ask what paint/color that is?
-
Those will really look nice on this car, especially "period-correct" for the look you're after. You going to leave them chrome/polished, or dull them to plain cast aluminum? I remember alot of the older (than me) guys' cars around here running plain aluminum slots, mostly because they were cheaper! They do have a certain "all-business" vibe about them unpolished. Also like 'em with only the outer rim polished. Build on! Oh, don't forget the Cherry Bomb "mufflers", or Thrush, if you like your neighbors!

Out of curiosity, is that hood from a different kit? From here it looks like red plastic bleed-through. Did you prep the hood any differently than the body?
-
Hoped you would get back on this! It is really taking shape now. Your color choice for the exterior is very tasteful and understated! Beautiful work.

My version of Chevys should be 1963 ElCamino!

Try using embossing powder in the bed to replicate a spray liner. Apply it and primer it heavier than usual, then sand off the sharpest peaks with some 800 grit or finer paper to just begin smoothing the texture to your desired finish. Liking your attempt here, don' give up; it's only plastic! -
Those wheels would look awful on your Dart, of course!! On my 57 Nomad, however...
-
THAT is coming along nicely!
-
You might try undrcutting the rear of the quarters a bit, giving the rear fender less of a blunt, or "squarish" profile, and more of a "torpedo" profile. This would make them appear to have less overhang (bulk) behind the rear wheels, and sort of gain visually some of the same effect as moving the wheel opening rearward. I'm thinking start a cut about a fourth ( or maybe even a third) of the way up from the bottom at the rear, slanting forward and down, ending just behing the wheel opening. just thinkin' out loud here! I'm loving this build.

Glad to see you back on this! Keep us posted...

Yea, I'd be happy to take those wheels off your hands, too!

Hey! Revell forgot to mold the oil pan on the engine block halves; now I'll have to scribe a line down the middle to make it look like a proper Revell kit!
-
Would love to see that, these body styles can look good!
