Great looking tuner build. I like the way you tinted the windows and those wheels look perfect for this.

A conversation via text with my sister....

I had a dealer loaner last week when they were putting the trailer hitch on my wife's new Cherokee Trail Hawk. The 2021 Dodge short bed was sort of a basic work truck but had a dial on the dash for the gear selector. -
Motor trend super models
espo replied to R. Thorne's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I hadn't seen his model show on TV until last night. He did an altered wheel base build using a Revell Chevelle SS396. He moved fast thru the build but explained how and what he was doing and it was easy to follow. Anyone considering such a build and wasn't sure on how to go about it might want to look at his show as he does a good job of showing how he does it. I will look at what he does next week just to get an idea of his work. -
That's about as real looking as it gets. If you find or remember their site please share that information.

The ESPO nickname came about after high school and in part because some people had a hard time pronouncing my name. The funny thing is this was also my fathers nickname when he was in school.

Looks great very realistic and the trim is all very cleanly done.

I like it. This is the kind of build that makes you smile.

I see what you're talking about in the pictures of the custom '55's. They didn't seem to do anything to remove any of that body line except maybe the chrome that would have been on a Bel Air model. Nice job reproducing the new side trim and it looks just like the cars in the pictures.

I have to admit to being spoiled by the newer cars in our garage, but there are several older cars I have had in the past that I would love to own again. The mention of the technology of todays cars reminds me that we have been waiting for a couple of months now for the computer chip that will make the radio and the backup camera in our '18 Charger play nice with each other. There are times when I go to back up and the camera doesn't work. The radio tells me that one of my preselected tunes is playing on another channel when it's not. OO for the old AM radio with the 8 track player option. Now you know how far back I would be willing to go. -
In the 1:1 world the '49 thru '53 Ford and Mercury Flatheads appear the same with the exception of a few fine details. So in our application in say 1/25th scale it would be hard to tell them apart. I think the first thing that someone would notice is the carbs. The Mercury used a different shaped OEM 2 barrel Carb. that looks somewhat like the one used on the early GM engines, but they aren't the same. I like the old AMT '49 Merc Flathead engine and it included Aluminum Heads and 3 - twos. These parts will drop onto the AMT '49 - '50 Ford kits with no issues. I would think you could also use them on the '53 Ford Victoria kit as well. The '50 Ford Pickup offers a great little Arden Head overhead valve conversion with 3- twos. There are an endless number of the earlier Flathead engine offered in some of the street rod kits from Revell. The major difference that you will notice on the pre '49 engines are the front mounted distributer and the upper water hoses run to the center of the heads instead of the front of the head. Hope this will help.

Very cleanly detailed build. I like the wheels and the stance.

Great looking use of what was just laying around ? I especially like the blown inline six.

There are several ways to get a "Candy Blue" paint color and the picture of CanCon's beautiful looking Chevy pickup is a great example of one. The famous SWC Gasser was raced in a few different shades plus even Black at on time. The color most often seen was a lighter shade of Metallic Blue but not a Candy color. I would find a couple of pictures of the car done in the color you're wanting. Post the picture here and I'll bet you'll get a lot of info on how to replicate the color you're after. As for doing a Candy Blue consider using either a Metallic Silver base coat for a bright finish or a Metallic Gold for a darker or deep finish. The color coat would be a Candy Blue or Blue tinted top coat.

1969 Camaro SS396 still on MSO
espo replied to Foghorn Leghorn's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks I was now able to pull up the site with this post. Very interesting story and an interesting car if only it was in my budget, which it isn't. The points I brought up about the registering of the vehicle are based on my being employed in the retail car business for over thirty years before retiring. Most of that time was in the state of California and only the last few in Kansas before retiring. The only problem that I can see with the transfer of ownership might have been when the first owner, son of and employee of a dealership, sold the car to the second owner. Should the second owner of the Camaro had also been a licensed dealer he would still be in the clear since he was a dealer. Unless a licensed dealer now buys the Camaro they are going to pay the taxes on the selling price and the state where it becomes registered may base the license fees on either their stated value for a '69 Camaro, he better hope, or on the value based on what the person payed for the car, he better hope not. That part can be very different from one state to the next. Since the car was only driven the 17000 miles and I'm thinking only under the best of road conditions I don't think any rust on the under carriage would be a problem and he did mention that he had undercoated the car when new. -
The Moebius Chevy II and the Ramp Truck look like something I would have to have, did they offer info on anything else ? Pegasus, when are their wheels and tires returning to the open market ? The Atlantis kits look interesting and the '55 and '57 Bel Airs sure look like old Revell kits ?

1969 Camaro SS396 still on MSO
espo replied to Foghorn Leghorn's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was unable to pull up the car you're talking about but I agree with you about the bubbles that appear on a car after extended contact with road salts. This car still being on it's MSO opens a lot of questions that who ever wants to buy this car needs to think about. Every state will have different ways of registering and titling such a car but you have to wonder about the original owner. Did they pay sales tax ? operate an unlicensed vehicle ? Does the state want back property taxes ? and would this be what is sometimes called "Jumping Title" since the owner has never titled the vehicle and is now passing that to the buyer ? Some where and some how the state is going to get the back fees that were never paid. -
Check out any Hobby or Craft store that offers jewelry making parts and tools. I have used both Hobby Lobby and JoAnns Fabrics.

Thank you for the pictures. So many great looking builds.

72 GMC short bed
espo replied to Hondamatic's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Very clean looking trucks. I like the lowered shortbeds stance. Great looking paint work on both builds. -
First, very impressed with your research on the subject. The way you have done the floor pan gives me an idea for a future project with a Type 1. The nice thing about putting your ideas out there is that there are many here with actual 1:1 back grounds to help on the details. Look forward to watching your build on this.

The body side trim looks good. The body line from the head light running back into the door area may draw your eye away from the chrome moldings on a lighter colored body. The drawing shows this body line almost removed.

The interior looks great. I remember friends who owned different Chrysler products from that era, and the dash mounted mirror always struck me as different. The only draw back I can remember was if anyone was siting in the back seat they would block the drivers view out the rear window. Very nice reproduction and mounting of the mirror.
