Snake45 Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 This thread reminds me, I need to get back to work on this one: Yes, it's real. And it's spectacular. Quote
Straightliner59 Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 The rarest kits I have were all purchased with intent to build. Except for the Garlits kit, I borrowed these photos from the interwebs. Both my Aurora kits are sealed. Quote

The GS kit sells for a whole lot more than he paid for the real thing. Everything seems to go through that phase. In the 60's they were just old bikes and people didn't care that much about them. Now they are rare barn finds. Quote
SfanGoch Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Ninny paid $100 for his in 1972. He always had cool stuff like an orange '66 Karmann Ghia he got in a trade in exchange for a used hang glider he found near Ellenville, NY and a kayak that same summer. Some people are just born lucky. Quote
Pete J. Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 I've had fun watching this! Kind of interesting to see what people think is "rare". I wonder if people are equating rare with valuable. They are not the same. If you watch shows like Pawn stars or Antiques Road Show you will know that just because something is old or there are few of them doesn't make it valuable. To be worth a lot, there have to be few of them and there have to be a number of people who want them. In economic parlance, high demand and scarcity. I don't say this to denigrate any of the choices here. I am the last person who could judge the value of a model, especially old american company models as I have little experience with them. I am just enjoying watching this. Thanks to all for joining in. This is fun! Quote

Granted, some of the kits that we have seen on this thread are not exactly main stream & therefore maybe not particularly valuable to a builder like most of us, but some of those odd kits like a model of JFK or "Sea Lab" might be extremely valuable to a collector. My guess is that they are quite rare. Anyway, the OP never really mentioned value anyway. It was all supposed to be about rarity. Steve Quote
Sport Suburban Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 I'm not sure which ones of these would be the rarest but I would have to say the 71 Torino kit is still factory sealed and pretty rare. Then maybe the 68 and 69 Javelins. All of these are mint unbuilt kits. Only the 68 Javelin is somewhat started. I had the bumpers rechromed and sold the funny car parts from that kit. All the rest are complete and I have not built them. Some of them like the 69 Javelin I have duplicate rebuilders. Quote
Sport Suburban Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 These were all mostly mint kits that I have built or are 1/2 done. Some the boxes were not mint thou. The Rebel was a water damaged kit so decals and box were bad but kit was fine. 71 cyclone box was crumbling and tail lights were missing. That one is 1/2 done. The 70 Grand Prix was factory sealed but that is done now. Most of my rare builds are restorations of previously built kits. I know I have some very racer resin kits to build to. Quote

Jantrix Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 A couple of Johans and yes, I will be building them. Quote
Pete J. Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 In spite of having some rare kits I will say this. There is nothing in my collection that I won't build just because it is old, rare or valuable. My hobby is building not collecting. Quote
martinfan5 Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 (edited) I do not have any what we would call rare kits, but if I did, I would for sure build it. Edited July 9, 2018 by martinfan5 Quote

DPNM Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 This is probably my most rare one. I have no intention to build it as it is from the box. Quote
Kit Basher Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 (edited) I don't know what's rare and what isn't, but I do have some oddball kits, and will build as many as I'm able. Here are two: Monogram Land Rover Tamiya Lotus Europa Edited July 9, 2018 by Kit Basher Quote

Several now that they are asking a couple of hundred for shipped from Japan. I many have to just take a trip and see if I can dig one out for less. If anyone has one of these I would gladly trade the Indian for it or perhaps the Indian and another incentive kit. I have a good collection of the Gunze high tech stuff. like the SWB, GTO, XKE, Cobra Dayton, etc. Hi Pete - I sent you a PM about this. Quote
Richard Bartrop Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 I don't know about valuable, but you don't see a lot of them around, and yes, I wish someone would make a ZIL kit to accompany it. 1 Quote

I don't care if they're rare or not, I just enjoy seeing all the cool old and unusual box art on this thread! I think vintage boxes have some sort of subliminal message that says "buy me and build me!" That's also why I have to keep up with what Round 2 releases, their retro boxes keep calling me to look and buy. I already own a couple of each of these, But I would have to buy more if they reissued them. They call out to me! I anxiously await the reissue of these... And I have to wonder why THIS one hasn't yet been reissued, when we know everything for it still exists.... Or this.. Yes, they're all based on recent repops, but the box art on these is just soooo much fun. I want them all! What say you? Quote

Makes me wish it was a more mainstream car like a Lincoln, Cadillac or even a vintage Mercedes. It's not like we've seen a lot of these Chinese limos around. And if model companies are always spouting off about producing kits that can sell enough to recoup the investment - then why would they make this? Quote
SfanGoch Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 It must've been a big seller in China when it was released in 1998. Trumpeter went on to release a lmo version, the Ford Falcons, Nova SS, '78 Monte Carlo and the '60 Bonnevilles and the American LaFrance Eagle Pumper. Quote
