Opinion on"craft" acrylics
TarheelRick replied to Ctmodeler's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I use these paints quite often, takes a bit of trial and error but they work very well and the color palette is unbelievable, they are even offering metallic paints now. This El Camino interior and the Willys modified were both done with cheap acrylics. -
Dropped by Micheal's today to see if they had anything worth looking at. They had the '83 Hurst Cutlass and it was marked $18, almost picked it up but then saw hidden behind some other kits the latest Dodge Pickup release. Decided I could do more with that one than I could the Hurst, although it was $30; but with a 20% coupon it wasn't too bad. May stop by tomorrow and pick up the Hurst.

Also a big McQueen fan and really enjoy your collection of his cars. Just last night I watched "Bullitt". Had not seen it in its entirety since the first time in a theater at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base in 1971. I still remember going over those hills and slinging side-to-side in my theater seat.

The issues with scratch building
TarheelRick replied to IbuildScaleModels's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Ace, will these industrial suppliers sell the smaller quantities needed by us as individual hobbyists? I know there are many of these companies that do not want to bypass their retail markets and many require a business license for tax purposes. What has been your experiences with them? -
Ford Aeromax L9000 "Far West"
TarheelRick replied to Ben500's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Very nicely done. Not much of a big-rig builder, but I really like the looks of this one. -
Who would have thought an Edsel could be called anything but ugly. Guess you proved them all wrong, that is one beautiful build. Your body work, paint, and everything about this build is spot on.
-
Thanks for sharing those memories with us. I guess my sense of style has pretty much remained the same since I opened my first "advanced custom" kit back in the early 60's. I thought they were ugly then and still do; although I do respect someone who takes the time to build one. That being said, I do have one in my pile to be finished, an AMT '61 Ford Styline kit with a Monogram ;58 T-Bird bubble top. All it really needs is some refinish work, since the original paint went south really badly.

Well I have learned something. I always thought he was only a big-engine, high horsepower gasser racer. Really nice build.
-
Looking forward to what you do with it. I have one in the lllooonnnggg line of to-do's before the sun sets.

I believe all of the later versions of the Mustang kit come with a Coyote engine.

Looks mighty fine to me, just enough weathering to get the point across and a pretty close representation of the 1:1. Looks like something from TRKI magazine.

My next build - Revell 56 Chevrolet Del Ray
TarheelRick replied to DRH_97's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Most excellent '56 Chevy. That color combination and the wheels really make it right. My first car was a black/white 150 2dr sedan, 6 cylinder three on the tree. I didn't really care, because it was my first car. Cost me $100, was solid, but the 6 was a bit weak - other than being a 6. -
I will venture to say 2/3rd or better of my trades have been part for part. If you are building something and need a certain part and have equivalent value parts laying around collecting dust, post it; someone may have what you need and would be willing to take some parts off your hands.
-
I am going to say I have been very well pleased on 99% of my trades. A few years back we had a person that initiated a few small parts trades, then began trading full kits, shortly several of us were out of kits with no return. All through the process there were health issues on their part. Then their friend/neighbor would take care of the trades for that person, with still no results. I will also send small parts to others; why leave them laying around in my parts box collecting dust when they can be used. The primary reason most of us would prefer a new trader, especially a new member to ship first, is that some people have signed up just to get access to the trade forum and then they begin the same issue as stated above. As mentioned earlier, be honest with what you are offering and specific on what you will accept in trade. One final thought, many of our members are out-of-country; if you do not want to trade with them please state in your trade request that you do not want to ship overseas. Now, show us what you have and lets see if we can build up your stash into what you want it to be.

If I ever gave up my love for Mustangs this might be the one to do it. That is one really nasty Camaro. It just looks ready to 'eat your lunch' along with anything else you might have driven up. Great job.

Going to be one fine looking Willys. One thing you may want to be aware of is the location of the front axle, it is a bit too much to the rear, Good luck on that kit hinge. On mine I just used some tubing glued to the nose, bent brass rod into a U shape through that tube and glued two more tubes to the chassis. I slipped the two legs into those two tubes and I have an instant flip front.

If I had the money to drive that I would call AAA to change the tire, wouldn't want to mess up Armani jeans..

38 Ford Coupe Hardtop racer
TarheelRick replied to alan barton's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
Definitely some interesting work on this conversion. I love the 40, but the 38 is a close second. I remember many of them running at Bowman Gray Stadium back in the early 60's. For the grille, have you considered using thin brass rod? I think it may be easier to make those curves. -
Got to agree, that is one sweet wagon. Wish Round2 could find those molds and reissue that one. My thoughts on the trailer, paint it white and put some U-Haul decals on it. As soon as I saw the picture that is what came to my mind. That being said, it looks good just the way you have it.

That is one seriously beautiful Galaxie. But then IMHO, that was one of the most beautiful cars FORD ever built. You did an excellent job .

Hobby Lobby re-opening
TarheelRick replied to Mike999's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Got this one for a good discount. The only part pilfered was the T-bucket body. I have plenty of those, so it was a pretty good deal. I have scored many "opened kits" for 50% or more off from Michael's, A. C. Moore. and the former Roses store when they sold models. I do get burned every once in awhile. I picked up 70 Chevelle that looked to be missing the tires and decals (?); when I got it home I discovered the crook had slit open the bag and removed the engine and much of the chrome pieces. So I have a body, chassis, and interior, with no chrome or engine; looks like it will be another short tracker. -
Scratchbuild Seminar's & How To's
TarheelRick replied to MikeyB08's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Wow, that is some ambitious work. Thanks for sharing it. One problem is with the "how-to's", many of them are several years old and the photos have disappeared, probably because of the Photobucket fiasco,
