Masking across panel lines?
Plowboy replied to NOBLNG's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Like David, I tuck the tape in slightly. -
Looks very realistic! The colors suits it perfectly! MPC made a kit of the '80. It came with a chopper and small trailer IIRC. There was a resin caster that did the later '80s (maybe an '86) Monte Carlo LS. But, it's been a while since I've seen one.

I would go with a six cylinder. You don't see them under the hood very often. I am a little biased though.

Agreed! This model shows what a pair of skilled hands can do with even a minimal kit! Well done Gareth!

Modern Trend - Plastic Wheel Arch Molding
Plowboy replied to Erik Smith's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That and the Mitsubishi Outlander with diamond tuck interior. Sorry Mitsubishi. But, not even playing AC/DC in your commercials can make up for that. -
Agree with you Rusty. That's how it should look.

There's an easier way. Use the grille from the Lindberg kit. If it would fit. I'm going to live with it. I give the Monogram Chevelle's grille a pass since in no way does it even remotely attempt to represent a stock Chevelle. How many stock '66 Chevelle's have a fiberglass flip front end?

I didn't notice the issue until after I had built the model and took the photos. I kept looking at it and it just looked off. At first, I thought the headlights were oversized. But, it was the headlight rings. Something I just noticed in the photos of the two full scale cars is the Turquoise Malibu's splash guard under the grille isn't visible and the bumper is tucked up right underneath the grille. Almost exactly like my model. The splash guard on the yellow Malibu is clearly visible.

I'll have to disagree on the wagon grille David. Here's a closeup photo of the grille on my '66. Note how the top of the headlight rings are past the wraparound trim. Here's another closeup. Here's a couple of photos of the real car. Notice how the top of the headlight rings are obscured by the wraparound trim on both.

That's the frontend I used on my model. The only problem with it is it has a bug eyed appearance. The headlight rings extend past the trim when they should be recessed. The grille should also be recessed.

To me, the Tamiya Basic putty sets up pretty fast. The White, on the other hand, does take a lot longer to set up and it shrinks like mad! To me, it's better suited for filling scratches after primer. You may want to give Tamiya's Epoxy putty a try if you want something that sets faster than the Basic.

'62 Ford Galaxie 500 Update! 12/23/22 Finally Done! Pic pg. 7
Plowboy replied to Plowboy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I got a bit of shine on the Galaxie and the foil applied. I just have to hit it all with Tamiya Finish Compound and it'll be ready for the glass. Then, I can concentrate on the engine and chassis. I'm thinking I'll paint the recess on the chrome trim red or black. The -
Moebius 1964 Nova SS - first detailed look inside the box...
Plowboy replied to tim boyd's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Two areas the Moebius Nova looks better than the AMT Nova are the brow above the windshield and the cowl. The only issue is the engraving on the cowl vents seems very light. -

To me, the AMT Nova's C pillar looks more accurate. How much wider is the C pillar on the Moebius Nova? Something else that looks different (and may be due to the photos) is the front fender and the wheel opening. Both look longer on the Moebius kit. -
How to remove tape "residue"?
Plowboy replied to Safire6's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
WD-40 works well and won't harm the paint. Then you can simply wash it with Dawn dishwash to remove the WD-40 residue. -
Moebius 1964 Nova SS - first detailed look inside the box...
Plowboy replied to tim boyd's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Maybe it's the angle of the photos. But, it looks like the roof on the AMT kit is a bit taller. Would you mind taking some measurements of both to compare? It also looks like the cowl has very light engraving on the vents and the windshield trim. -
I would at least strip it and repaint it. It looks like it's Testors One Coat Lime Ice on the body. It also looks like it crazed or wrinkled on the right fender and door. I have one of these that I'm going to stick a T-Bolt chassis underneath.

ThunderCat: 58 TBird with 92 Cougar roof: a contemporary Custom
Plowboy replied to Claude Thibodeau's topic in Model Cars
Very well done Claude! Modern roofs on older bodies rarely work. But, this has quite a natural look to it. And you're welcome for the recipe! -
I would go ahead and strip the paint. Then you can see what you have to deal with. Strippers won't harm the tail lights or glass.

MPC '82 Chevy Step 4X4
Plowboy replied to Plowboy's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
I did a quick mockup and no, I still haven't even primered the chassis yet. All of a sudden, it seems like the wheels no longer suit the truck. Guessing it's the brown color? So, I grabbed this set of Rallies that I had modified from a Monogram '76 Chevy. I removed the centers from the rims and glued them to smaller rims. I also found a set of tires from the AMT '80 Toyota snap kit. These suit it much better IMO.
