Scale model building good for the brain
Ulf replied to atomicholiday's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
All of a sudden I became curious to try building a kit from a design sketch, project plan, schedule and budget... Not that I think it will be better or more fun but maybe it will make me a little smarter ? now that I stop working on projects professionally ! One thing is for sure I will not become more beautiful. -
Scale model building good for the brain
Ulf replied to atomicholiday's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
The great relaxation in model building is that it is not a disaster if you fail. It's what really gives the brain rest and recovery, which it also needs to develop (the brain develops well into old age provided it is stimulated and rested). You control the design, budget, schedule, forecast and quality. -
Race of Gentlemen presents... California Drag Racing 2023 Build Thread

oops, I really have a lot to learn from that build and Kit Karson's 33 coupe project. I haven't spent many hours in hot rod garages in the last 25 years and it shows so I really appreciate having other projects to look at every now and then -
Oh, I like the color combination on Tudorn, palette cleaner at its best. I am saving that image for the future.

Wow, I really like all the details. Now I have a couple of weeks at home and hope to get some bench time with my coupe. -
What non-auto model did you get today?
Ulf replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Oooh, one of the very few classic racing Porsches I've seen in person. I was really shocked by how worn and scruffy it was, far from even a utility car. -

Incredibly nice. Everyone who builds after a model impresses me greatly because I have tried but given up because it is so much more difficult. Slightly OT, V8 Magazine had fantastic reports by Juha Airio, some of whom were in the SAE at the time.

Model building versus other hobbies
Ulf replied to Sledsel's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
One of several things I appreciate about this forum is the American friendly and helpful style. The generosity of sharing knowledge at this forum is another part that I also appreciate very much. I sometimes wish I could bring that spirit to the professional world. -
Your Approach to Building?
Ulf replied to Calb56's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In short, I build cars that I am relieved not to have to own. The only dream car I have, a 32 high boy, I will probably never build. I can revel in dents, surface rust and worn tires without having to deal with the consequences. The feeling of being free from responsibility is wonderful. -

So, now I have tried to get the plastic pieces together to my 34 coupe. The in line six in the AMT 51 Chevy was a bit crooked so instead of working on it I made my own engine block which at least is perpendicular, "the clutch" is an old Monogram rim and a part from the 51 air cleaner. The ribs on the liftgate are a pair of valve covers from an AMT Corvette. What do you say, can this pass as an in line 6 with Fisher Cross flow head ? -

North West Short Lines the Chopper II. Cost as 1.5-2 kit type Round2 but earned back on reduced waste Plasticard. It is not childproof, but in most ways safer than the #11 or loose razor blade. Highly recommended.

What year did AMT move production to China ?
Ulf replied to Ulf's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks I had forgotten about Mexico, those years I was confused by love. I am blessed with a merchant who indicates years as on wines. The day the supply of AMT runs out like Jo-Han, I will have to look for old MONOGRAM. To be honest, I really like Round2 and Moebius but it is really a nice feeling to open an old kit. -

Nice I will return to TROG as soon as I have built some more on my Ford van, the team must have a tow car. My 34 currently has an injected straight Chevrolet 6 with Fisher cross flow top. We'll see if the team gets the pieces together for the race. -

I had to measure out three points for screws on Moon caps, my goodness how difficult. A colleague CAD drew this picture that I intended to print with the circles as a guide so that the cap was centered but it was actually easier to save the picture in my smartphone, set up the brightness on the Smartphone and put the Moon cap on the screen. I checked that the image/circle was correct on the screen with a circle template.

How big is your... stash?
Ulf replied to Pierre Rivard's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
42 kits, two 1/24, the rest 1/25, mainly AMT. Some will be merged into one car, at least five maybe ten will be finished this year, the rest will take me ten years to build and that feels good. Since I can only paint on one of the sites I'm building on, it's a bit jerky. edit: 43.. -
Scratch building Chopper Fork
Ulf replied to OldTrucker's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
What type of fork do you want to build, telescop, springer or girder? If I may be curious, which kit are you building ? Some have managed to solder brass profiles, a watchmaker's job, I have before digital time extended a Revell Electra Glide fork with Plasticard or if it was sprues ?? which I let a friend turn to the right dimension.
