The Hinman roadster, a study in rust update 1/18/23
Bullybeef replied to Bullybeef's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I have no secrets it’s all trial and error, I picked through an AK paint rack and picked out all the colours that had rusty hues to them. Later to discover all my selections in a “Rust” kit haha Acrylics are more forgiving for this type of painting and I quite enjoy working with them. Layering without looking like layers is the hardest skill -

Thank you. there is a lot more work involved in making something look dull and haggard than there is in making it shiny and perfect haha. -

@Bernard Kron I use brushes no air involved, I had a stint in the eighties where I built military armour and I remembered a couple of tricks from basic weathering. -

I think I have one, thanks for the offer. I just had to dig a bit deeper. -

Layers 2 through 4 of aging complete, now we will be moving on with some finishing details, steering, shifter, pedals and exhaust, still looking through the bins for a suitable radiator. -

Thank you @Dennis Lacy, achieving the finish on this model is way harder than any other I’ve worked on in my past two years. I appreciate your comments. -

Well I’m pretty happy with the base run of the interior panels, I’m not going for 100% accuracy here, just as close enough for government work kinda close. The rust base will have multiple layers and chipping to get the desired finish. All that will be left will be the weathering of the wheels, exhaust and a cooling system. I’m sure I’ll think of others to add in as I go. stay tuned for the continuation of the Hinman roadster. and thank you gentlemen for the continued support. @kenmojr it’s a survivor hotrod not a rat rod and I’ll never be an oilers fan! -
Well you had me at VW, I have the base version of that kit, I’ve actually had it since 1987. It’s followed me across the country and multiple moves. It’s in a semi unfinished state. Maybe your build will entice me to finish mine.

Thank you, matching the interior should not be a problem, hoping to bang this and a few others across the finish line by the end of the year, should be my most fruitful harvest of builds. I may even attempt to do a parts box build. -

Okay so this one got away from the bench for awhile, with the blustery winter set in up here in the GWN I figured it was time to blow her dust off the plans and make some headway on this. Started the fab on the interior panels. Because of the rough made in the backyard look it will be fairly easy to replicate as it does not seem it was built to any spec or even proper measurements, I’ll be able to hide some sins with paint and it’s the rough general look I will be going for. -
Long term 1957 Buick Century Caballero Wagon

I dig this idea, wagons from that era are so cool. Can’t wait to see some more work aka mock-up. -
Show 'n' Go Chopped 5-window Deuce Coupe - Update 12-13, Paint
Bullybeef replied to Bernard Kron's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Inspiring work there Bernard, I did a mock-up a couple of months back of a 5 window with all the louvred panels. I may have to dig it out and give it a shot at the bench again. -
Hey Greg I’m really digging the concept of the modernization of the tbird, what kit was the mustang?
-
Looking good already Greg.

Well you seem to have clean building skills, every one you complete adds more to your skills, practice makes perfect. Keep it up. -
Well when you dig deeper you find the actual truth, it’s not a remake it’s a sequel
-
That’s kinda what I was implying, the continuity errors.
-
As was mentioned above the story line arc for Bullit it was kinda weak, and we as car people only really like the chase scene. I’ve watched a couple of originals vs remakes lately and while some are markedly better, sometimes the originals are better because of the story line. Recently i watched Point blank with Lee Marvin, and followed up with Payback a Mel Gibson flick, both had their good and bad moments. id like to see what Spielberg can do with the weak story of Bullit and maybe the car chase can be improved on.
