Another source of period pictures would be Hot Rod Deluxe. This latest issue had a focus on 1957 and Altered race cars. -
You may be amazed at what just changing the wheels and tires can do for a model car or a real one for that matter. I personally like this kit, but it is based upon a model that was an extremely limited in number. Depending on who you talk to the 500 number seems to be the excepted production number. I'm not trying to tell you what you should do since that's for you to determine. Chevrolet sold many Malibu SS's and Malibu hardtops, and except for a few 6 cylinders most were 283 or 327 V-8's. You could easily convert the SS 396 model to something a little more main stream easily. First remove the 396 Flags from the side of the body, then add an upper molding to the trunk lid. This would give you a Malibu SS. Remove any SS markings and install a bench seat and you would have a Malibu, buckets were optional I believe. You may or may not want to change the engine to a small block. Just a thought if you find this kit boring you can change it with the minimal fuss.

I think they used a lot of everything to put this together. I'm not Dissing this, just wondering what all went into it. This reminds me of a puzzle they used to have in an automotive magazine where they would have picture of a car that was made up of many different body features and you are supposed to identify what car they came from . -
I agree with the others on your color choice. Not often seen but looks very rich. Great job laying out the vinyl roof moldings. I noticed that you have striped the chrome on the front bumper. To my knowledge the standard bumpers were all chromed. Or maybe you were just cleaning up the bumper ? I have always thought Revell got the exhaust wrong on the Nova kit. My '72 Nova as well as my '69 Camaro only had the muffler mounted behind the differential. The two large mufflers in front of the differential were the way most after market exhaust systems were done.

I like your subject choice and paint colors. A little sanding and polishing can make a world of difference in the final appearance of the paint.

Tamiya offers a Red Primer that might be worth a look. On the cap in very small lettering it says "Recreates anti-rust paint used on tanks". -

I was also going to suggest you look at Military paints for a match. I have used Tamiya AS-26 Light Ghost Grey. There are others that are darker also. -

In addition the builder seems to have streamlined the door hinges. California had some interesting Fender requirements at that time. -

That rump sure looks like a GEO Metro. This builder must have had some interesting Wrecking Yard Crawls. Parked on the grass so he may be a Red Neck. -
I would never have thought of that, but I see no reason that it shouldn't work. Very interesting that someone would combine 80 year old technology with something that is very common today.

Super smooth paint and the roof insert really sets it all off. Your chassis and engine modifications to the kit are pretty much the was it was done on the 1 on 1 cars. Perfect look and cleanly detailed.

I think your build turned out great. My knowledge of all the details on these cars is limited, but I noticed that the picture that GTX6970 provided shows the car as a tudoor post car and not a Hardtop. I know the race teams often would build many cars and it maybe that they built a Sedan and a Hardtop and the NHRA team number is also different.

I like your color choice, is the top going to be Pearl White or a straight gloss White ? This is a great kit. I found the trunk hinge a little fussy but it works well once you get it right. Another suggestion on the body side chrome. Think about scrapping the chrome off the back side of the moldings, this will let them sit deeper in the body and makes gluing easier.

I have been silently following your build. You had mentioned decal problems around the door opening. If this is still a problem, something I have done, use a sharp #11 blade and cut the decal following the seem. Use a small amount of Solvaset in the seem and the decal usually will settle down into the seem.

If all else fails you could go with the pick up / Ute look. I like the smooth way you opened the fenders for the tires. -
Almost an Art Deco look to it. I'd hate to get it dirty mowing the lawn.

I haven't seen any Moebius kits in the local HL for a couple of years. At one time a couple of the stores in the area had the AMT tires but they also have not been seen for some time. -
I actually remember them all. that in its self is an accomplishment at this point in time. You forgot MAD Magazine, Schwinn Bicycles, "Pegger" colored pants with the Ivy League buckle on the back. How about Flash Gordon ? Not the NASCAR kid. I remember having the milk delivered into a small door on the outside of the house. In the kitchen you would open a similar door to get the milk, and in the winter you better get it early before it froze. I remember riding home with my father, in a driving early fall snow storm, with one of the first '49 Fords in the neighborhood. I guess I don't pass wind, it is now dust.

1967 Camaro Wheel Covers from Fireball Modelworks

Chevrolet changed their center hub cap on the rally wheels between '67 and '68. The '67 hub cap, as Snake pointed out was a one year only issue and it was to announce that the vehicle was equipped with the new for '67 disc brake option which required the rally wheel option. The '68 hub cap is the one most commonly seen from then on and had a raised center on the hub cap. Another hub cap that is rarely seen was used on police cars. I don't believe it was ever offered to the general public but has become popular with many when retro fitting rally wheels. The hub cap is fairly flat with a small bowtie in the middle and one 360 degree circle around it. There is also reproduction hub caps in the after market that offer the "PD" type cap with the bowtie and another with no markings at all. That is the showroom stuff. I had a new '68 Chevrolet Bel Air with disc brakes and the 15 by 7 wheel. To me the center hub cap stuck out to far. I know a guy that had a '67 Camaro RS/SS and I was able to convince him he would be upgrading his '67 with the new '68 hub caps so he wanted to trade with me. We both were happy. We must remember with a model it can be what ever we want to be.- 18 replies
