1/25 AMT 1964 Olds Cutlass F85 Convertible
Oldcarfan27 replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
My local HobLob just got this in. $29.99 + 40% off. For a model that hasn't been available for around 50 years. The fact that Round 2 put up money to fix this one and still sells it for the same price as the other kits, says a lot about their long term vision for the company. I feel like I just got an old, sealed annual kit that I just found on a forgotten shelf, in some out of the way hobby store. When I picked it up, I got the same giddy feeling that I had when I was a young kid! I'm definitely buying a few more of these. One, because I have many ideas for this one. And Two, because I want to support the company that's doing so much to make this hobby more enjoyable. I want them to know they did the right thing by resurrecting this old tool. Scratch this one off the Holy Grail list, we now have this one to keep bringing back for the future. -
Did I miss something? Did they say they were going to reissue the 74 Charger? Sure has been a lot of talk about it on this thread.

If manufacturers would be making more odd ball subjects like this - instead of the everyday Camaros, Mustangs, 57 Chevys and Chevelles - ad nauseam, I wouldn't care if they were snap kits, Craftsman kits or unassembled promos. I'd buy them all!

Boy this thread went into a gyroscope of all directions!

That car must've meant a lot to that family. Father, son and uncle all had a connection to it. RIP Kerry.

I wish you had posted a picture of the ad. The post is now gone, so I didn't get to see them.

So where did the batteries go? I assume a big hole where the spare tire sits. However, wiring template doesn't leave much length for anywhere but the front wheel well.

Your skills look great already! Keep having fun, that's what it's all about.

Excuse me, but you're not supposed to post pictures of real cars on a modelling forum! Nice work.

As I own a real 78, I have a real affinity for this car. As such, I have gotten to know all the subtle curves and nuances of the original. I find the Revell T/A looks chopped and slab-sided. The curves just don't capture the fluid lines of the 1:1. On the positive side, the interior looks great and has plush looking seats and door panels. The chassis has good, correct details. The decals are the best of the three makers. Monogram's 1/24th scale has the most faithful body shape. The interior and engine are the biggest letdown. The front grilles are too square and squashed. The decal sheet only includes the bird - no pinstripes. MPC/AMT kit has the most possibilities to be improved. The rear spoiler and fender skirts, being separate, can be massaged to fit better. The general shape of the body is good. Down side is the chassis, engine and interior are best ignored. Decals, while not great did include the the bird with open plumage. I had started a build, using the best parts from all three kits. The MPC body, Revell interior, wheels and chassis. Whenever I get it painted, I'll probably be using the best decal pieces from all three variations. Unfortunately, there has never been one company that got the entire car correct.

Modeling vs. reality

No magic trick, just remove all the suspension parts and "VOILA!" -
What military grey was mentioned to cover red?

Maybe this one? -
I think all of them have their plusses and minuses. AMT Ford van looks good, but has no interior detail. MPC Ford van looks great. Has interior detail and a separate side door, but hasn't been issued since the mid 80s, so consider that one - $$$$. MPC Dodge van is good, if you like the 80s flat nose era and don't get the "backbirthed" grille from the ambulance issues. Early annuals had better interior parts, but there again - $$$$$. I like the AMT Chevy van. Good details and fun choices. I just wish they hadn't cleaned off the roof supports from the A-Team issue. That roof was correct. The smooth roof from before and after it is just wrong. Revell Custom 70s Chevy van has great detail inside and out, if you like 70s "vanning" style. I don't like the big fat tires and cheesy 10 hole wheels that it comes with, so that would be my first change to it. Separate roof, hood and doors are a plus! How about Revell's Vanagon or 60's VW bus? Esci had a cool Euro Ford Transit van back in the 80s. And Hasegawa had their own VeeDub busses as well.

I like them all. My favorite is the Belvedere

Or the ice cream truck, filled with the same!

Great color choice. I really like the grabber colors back then!

Remember Saturday morning cartoons?

This is going in a different direction, but I always enjoyed Charlie Brown cartoons during all the holidays throughout the year. Still do. Reminds me of happier times in my childhood. -
Iron Armor primer - has anyone used it?

I see no pink at all! This is looking good. I gotta get me some and try it. Hopefully the formulation isn't different for California. -
I have a thing for these Lotus'. When I was a kid, I had a magenta colored Matchbox car. I've been hooked ever since. I have to wonder - how do you work on that engine? Looks like you'd have to climb all the way in just to get to it. Great job on a cool kit.

Look well done to me!

Fantastic save, Mike! I never liked those wheels on my 63, but they look perfect here. I may have to rethink my options.
