AMT kits suck!
Doug 1061 replied to Plumcrazy Preston's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sorry, my mistake. Mostly it was that multi piece body that I found tedious as could be. Don't care to do another one. Never could get the top to work. I think part of it was when I corrected the body to get rid of the cutouts behind the trunk lid. That made it look better but after I could not get the linkage for the top right. It didn't help that the guy I was building it for started asking if it was done yet, causing me to rush it a bit more towards the end. I did end up getting it back, but then I dropped it. I need to spend some time on it one of these days. -
AMT kits suck!

Lee, there was the usual sloppy fit of some of the parts. Biggest thing for me was the cab and hood sat too high. To remedy this I cut through the rear cab mount with a razor saw so the cab would sit down on the frame rails, dropped it roughly 1/8 in.. That required having to cut the front cab mounts down to match. Then had to rework the hood hinges to match. It kinda snowballs from there a bit since I had to grind a bit of the frame out where the radiator mounts and whittle some off the bottom of the radiator and sand some off the top of it to clear the hood. Also have to alter the exhaust since the stacks are now a bit lower, and I believe the steering linkage. Can't remember on the battery box, think it was OK. Biggest pain was the hood hinges/radiator fitment. Pretty much whatever I had to do to make it work. Also the small vertical part of the air intake tube in front of the intake turbo.. It was a good bit of extra work but I feel it was worth it in the end. Hope this helps. -
You had a good year. Nice collection.

Nice wheelbarrow..... That came out very nice. Good color choice, like the dirtied up look of the top of the seat and door panels. Had to do a double take on the wheels, good idea having different wheels on each side. Are those resin tires or did you cut them flat to keep it from driving itself off the shelf?

AMT kits suck!
Doug 1061 replied to Plumcrazy Preston's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
To say this kit sucks is a bit of a stretch. I picked up this W925 at a swap meet at my LHS. It's an original from the early 70s. That tool was pretty sloppy even back then. I had to walk away from it several times, I like to keep 2 or 3 builds going at a time so if one gets frustrating I can work on something else. Build a Revell '59 Ford Skyliner then nothing will seem difficult. The only reason that one didn't get kicked under the rear tire of my truck and peeled out on was cause it belonged to a late friend and I was building it for him. That W925 comes up nice with a bit of patience and perseverance and a set of Moebius big rig tires. I am happy with how mine came out. -
looks like you can stop searching for that perfect paint job. Beautiful foil work also. Superb job all around.

Very nice work. That Pennzoil car must really pop out in the sunlight.

That's a nice collection. Looks like you never lost your touch. I really like that 57 Ford and that Merc. I took a twenty some year hiatus from building back in the late 70s. Got away from it when kits were getting up to $4.50 USD in the late 70s and figured they were getting entirely too expensive. I had a couple kits I started back in the early 80s and put them aside. 20 years later I had a place with a spare room and started tinkering with those two kits and I was hooked again. After I stumbled across this site my builds started looking much better. I have learned a lot from everyone here. The internet truly is the best tool for building models.

New Kits of Old Subjects from Round2

I know. My lady friend has a 94 XJ with 260,000 mi. Its in great shape. I would be good for a few of these if they ever kit these up. That, and my favorite Jeep, the full size Cherokee. Don't recall ever seeing one of these in styrene. -
MPC Schwinn Stingray....

This is the best build of this kit I have seen so far. I have one of these in the pile, have to find something suitable for cable housings. I remember when these bikes came out in the late 60s. I wanted the white Cotton Picker, but couldn't swing the $110 price tag. There was an Orange Krate at a local bike shop a month or so ago, minus the front fender, they wanted $3500 for it. Crazy. -
Super nice work on all these. I really like the Notso Special, just something about it.

These all look great. Your sister should be tickled with that beetle. I have always had a soft spot for air cooled VWs. My pick for favorite would have to be that Impala.
-
These are all top notch, but I like the T bird the best. Always a good feeling when you can get a black paint job to come out smooth. Plus with it lowered makes it look sinister.

It's that time. I managed to complete 10 models this year. Not likely that I'll get any more finished by years end. I know it's not all cars but thought it would be easiest to put it all together. Did a Revell 1:12 Shelby GT500, 1:12 Tamiya Honda 125 Monkey, Revell 70 Charger RT, Revell 70 Mustang Mach1, Revell 77 Firebird, Vendo pop machine from AMT Tip Top Shop kit, Moebius 65 Ford long bed aka The Italian truck, Great Dane extendable flat bed trailer. AMT 519 Kenworth W925, and a 1:72 Airfix P51D.

Nice work all around. I'm not a huge fan of early Camaros, but this one just looks right. Beautiful paint and foil work.

Revell 77 Firebird. Decent kit, went together well, the "flares" on the body coulda been done better. The rear were square at the bottom and a bit too wide, a bit of sanding took care of that. Too bad they didn't add the Trans am decals. My sister had a 77 Trans am 30 or so years ago, so built this to replicate her car. It didn't have T tops so I just glued them in place and painted the top. Built box stock, no under hood detail, it's just gonna sit in a plastic case forever. Thinking I'll give it to my sister. This is the actual car. Color is Testors light yellow, hope you like. Comments welcome.

Superb work so far. I think we're all gonna learn something watching this come together. Will be following this for sure. -
1970 Ford F250 Crew Cab 4x4
Doug 1061 replied to Chuck Most's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That's a nice beater. Nice work on that crew cab conversion keeping everything straight and square. Times have really changed. I remember back in the 70s and 80s the only owners of crew cab trucks were the military, the forest service and the railroad. If you somehow ended up with one of those, you were stuck with it. You couldn't give one away. In the summer of '19 I went shopping for a truck, walked in and said I want a regular cab long bed truck. They all looked at me like I was from another planet. Needless to say I had to settle for an extra cab short bed. That dump bed is a nice touch also, cant beat that for doing yard work and hauling. -

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. I'm hoping to make some good progress on this over the next few days. This has been a fun build/experiment so far. But I always consider every model I do an experiment and a learning experience. -

Brian, thanks for that tip. I haven't been up close and personal with one of these. Still gotta do a bit more research here, sort of making it up as I go. -

Looks great. You captured that workhorse look real nice. Trailers look good also, I especially like the car hauler. That rusty header pipe is a nice touch too.
